IDC claims tablet shipments will fall 5.9% in 2016, give way to 2-in-1 devices

09 March, 2016
The statistic seems to show an increasing interest toward the more productivity-driven detachable form factor and the Windows 10 OS.

Sick of people saying windows is not good for touchscreens. It is perfectly fine and easy to use with touch. What is primary use of touch screen devices with screens 7 inches or over(tablets)? Videos/music, web browsing, online social media and few games. For all these things touch friendly apps are on windows. Use VLC from windows store instead of program. Most social media apps are there too. Some games are missing from windows store but there are enough already and you get 1000x better games if you use keyboard and mouse. And MS EDGE is good enough for use with touch screen too.

So what is it that makes iOS and Android better touch optimized? The UI? So you like single touch icons instead of tiles? Is that enough to declare OS not touch optimized?

I have a surface book, but i still use it like a laptop. Why do you have trackpad when you have touchscreen? Why do you have touchscreen when the windows UI is still best to be used with mouse and keyboard?
Yes it is a nice product but it is very confusing for what was build
It is very strange and ugly in some situations to see a businessman using touchscreen on a laptop. Trackpad is still the best and elegant way to use touch with your fingers the UI

Your 'source' appears to be making up figures. IDC's website shows something TOTALLY different. http://www.idc.com/getdoc.jsp?containerId=prUS41072516

I have my doubts.
I have mixed feelings. I do like small computers.
But a 2-in-1 devices are thicker and heavier then a laptop style device with the same size screen and the same hardware.
Windows still does not offer a good touch only enviroment. So there is really no point of using the 2-1 devices as tablets.
It might be a good trick to make people think that they bought both a tablet and a laptop. And in that way, it might help getting the devices in to peoples hands.
But if nothing major happens, and the sales do increase. The question is, if not in a few years, there will be a wave of cheap and small ultra portables, that takes over from these 2-1 devices. When people realise that they can get thinner, lighter devices, that probably skips on the tochscreen that people will have realized that they hardly use.

So the post-PC era is iPad, and the post-iPad era is 2-in-1 PC tablet. Come full circle.

At the end of the day, I installed Windows via bootcamp, create and run my VBA macros, play games, manage my files better. In short, Macs are just for browsing the web and watching videos, probably a little photoshop and after effects, But I hate how it organizes my files. Everything is done by clicking since the mac shortcuts have way too many combos.

2in1 aka netbooks.

The market made a huge step back. Hopefully the trend would soon revert.

The Nokia issue, the failure of W8 in PC's and the hurry for a newer version, and the shift that MS made in it's strategy (they are now aiming to lead in services, and while they need their own OS as a tool to do that, the marketshare of Windows doesn't seem to be that relevant now).

I remember in 2012, there was a research stating that by 2014, Windows OS would be the second most used smartphone OS. It's already 2016 and that never really had a chance of happening it seems.

using 6 types of device
watch
5.1 phone
5.7 note with stylus
8" tab
10"nb
desktop

each has its strength and use. android touch based tab would not replace win10 nb, or vice versa. but really, a tab can be used for 3years. this might be why its sales is falling. phone is the primary deice, have interest to change it every 12months
