HTC still is the only OEM that openly provides the unlocker and kernel code for it's phones so you can unlock and build your own ROMS or use other ROMS, such as CM.

I have seen zero announcements from either HTC or Google indicating that will change anytime soon.

    USA only as always. They get devices at cheapest prices, and if that wouldn't be enough various promotions whilst in Europe the same devices cost more in EUR than in USD even though EUR currency is higher.

      Good luck. Google is locking down Android so you will not be able to update to a different ROM without installing stock firmware first. It's not a bad situation now, but wait until Android is no longer supported on the Nexus and you can't load Cyanogenmod as a result.

          I am going to suggest you have never paid much attention to ram usage on mobile phones/tablets...

          Android OS, starting with kitkat/4.4 optimised memory usage, and allowed less RAM loaded phones to work fast, and do more.
          I have a Nexus S, whose paltry 384MB runs 4.4 well. Doesn't multitask to well/FLAC playback running voodoo sound and web browsing is just about beyond it.... But it does work.

          Android OS takes all the memory available and just loads stuff into it.
          So, a 1GB of ram phone loads the OS and then recent apps/ frequent programs are loaded JUST IN CASE a user wants them.
          In this way, a 2GB and/or a 3 or 4GB phone all do the same thing...
          If you want to run something not in the memory pool, it dumps something unused and then loads the required app.

          If we do this on laptop computers, running inefficient Windows OS, whilst they are plugged in; we can save battery life (programs in ram is less drain than spinning hard drives to load to ram...), but I do not see a huge and practical use for doing so on tablets and phones.

          I would take 2GB of high speed ram and wide bus interface (seldom is mentioned in a spec sheet), over 6GB of ram etc.
          It is when us consumers continue to buy 'bigger number parts', rather than better parts, we tell the manufacturers what we want with our money...
          Unfortunately we then end up with a market with a wide range of performance lacking and unoptimised hardware.

          Nexus 9 may have had heating issues that throttled performance that would be a detriment (in any system) more than not having even more excessive ram than is needed..


          But please, somebody educate me; are their any mainstream programs on android that happily suck over 1.5GB of ram? Programs that are on the App Store and used by many..

                A tablet with only 2GB of ram? No thanks. It was a bad idea then, it's a bad idea now. 4GB should be the minimum of Android tablets, sadly none have this figure, which is one more reason why they seem so useless (low specs).

You just listen to the early pre launch reviews of a phone that got bashed before it was actually released. This was a pretty good phone that never had a chance because of that. The overheating thing was blown completely out of proportion. My phone has never once overheated.

                      No thanks. I can get a new HTC One M9 for 300 and the Nexus 9 brand new for 200 and no tax.

                        HTC tried to fix the 20MP camera of M9 last year but never heard how good the 'Supreme Camera Edition' is.
