New 9.7-inch iPad Pro comes with underclocked A9X chipset

22 March, 2016
This means that the bigger 12.9-inch iPad Pro is faster than its smaller sibling despite sporting the same SoC.

Spec wise, the 9.7 ipad pro is still the second fastest tablet between ios and android, so it'snot too bad

The old 2048x1536 resolution of the 9.7" iPad is so last year. It's not even retina ie. 326dpi. Let's see a 2560x1920 (ie. 5MP) resolution for true retina display...just like the iPad Mini!

The larger tablet has almost 80% more pixels, yet the GPU is only 16% faster. This means that the smaller tablet's graphics will actually be over 50% faster!

I don't think the reason for underclocking it would be because of the heat. The 9.7 ipad pro is big enough for proper dissipation. What the most likely thing is that they made it slightly slower than the bigger ipad so that it wouldn't overshadow it.

sa11oum, 22 Mar 2016Have we learned nothing yet? Specs don't matter. Just look ... moreOf course specs matter. A9 was the best SoC of 2015, no wondered it destroyed everything.

Why specs wouldn't matter is beyond me. Most software is well optimized at this point, specs matter more than ever...

sa11oum, 22 Mar 2016Have we learned nothing yet? Specs don't matter. Just look ... moreDoes it really "destroy" every android device out there?
In single core performance it's somewhat better.

In multicore performance, it actually scores lower than some android devices.

And when it comes to the GPU, it also has a lower screen resolution than every android out there packing the latest chipsets.
And in off-screen benchmarks at 1080p it scores lower than some android devices.
And the GPU has nothing to do with the dual core CPU.

So it clearly does not destroy any devices out there. It is about on the same level.
Sure the single core performance is better. But we've seen that in desktop CPUs many times.

Also iOS is probably a more efficinet OS. So I would guess that if Apple used the same SOCs as used with android devices and they implemented support for it in the OS, they would get better scores in iOS than in Android. But android is made less efficient to allow for more flexibility, in the ability to run skins and the ability to run on more hardware configurations. So it's not really a fair comparisson.

But don't go around thinking that your iPhone has more performance than the lastest android devices, because accroding to benchmarks it does not.
And it's not cheaper, not to buy, but it's cheaper to produce. If Apple lowered their margins, it could be a pretty good price to performance ratio, if they did that by lowering the price. If they lowered the margins by improving the hardware inside, then Apple could have probably made a device that actually performs better than every android out there.
But as it is now, the iphone 6S is about the same price as the Samsung S7, and offers abou the same processing power, but lack some other hardware advantages of the S7. You may think it looks better however.

This has everything I want in a tablet, great size, light weight, great for gaming, great for drawing with the pencil, has 4 speakers, supposedly 10 hr usage out of the battery. Only bad thing is the price D:

Have we learned nothing yet? Specs don't matter. Just look at how the 6s destroys every Android out there with a measly dual core with 2 gigs of RAM. It doesn't matter what's written down. But for the record, it's probably clocked down to save battery and since the screen is lower-res it doesn't need all that.
