Why we all got a chance to upgrade it for free? Because they needed beta testers. Sure, soon it may transform into something different than it is right nown but in current state, it is unacceptable to me. I really hope soon they will have a strong competition from free, open source OS'. It would only make it better for the customers, because they would have to fight for them. As for now there is no one to compete with, so they are just doing whatever they want. But I hear what you're saying. Perhaps I'll give Win10 one more shot in the future. For now I'll pass.

I don't know the specifics read about it a while back. But I hear you and you do have the choice no doubt. If you enjoy windows 7 then keep using it. It just will be abandoned in terms of features. And that happens with every OS you don't update to right? Windows XP, Windows 7. They all introduced new stuff. Stuff you don't get in the older versions. Whether it be Mac OSX or anything else. So you will maintain the OS the way you had it.
Data is being collected everywhere, everything you use from facebook to gmail smart inbox. Heck even a bunch of ios apps were caught gathering data illegally and even many android apps. But the younger crowds into iphones and other stuff live off this stuff. They want software to make things easier for them and are willing to integrate with it. AI's are big right now and all this information/data is helping these intelligent networks to grow. Maybe one day there will be a skynet haha.
But yes make your own choices. I used unix based os's for a good 16 years. From early bsd to slackware and came to love OpenSuse for desktop. And If I ever feel like I don't like where windows 10 has gone there will be many alternatives and I can always fall back on linux.

Another issue is people who aren't tech savvy and have a working computer may not want to take any chances in fear of something going wrong. And we all know MS updates aren't always so smooth. A lot of people have old computers that just work and they will not touch them. They don't want to invest more time into it. I think to move these people over you need to release stuff that is worth their money. They are more likely to purchase new hardware eventually than to upgrade. There's a lot of factors in it.
There's also the fact that online you will find all the bad stuff echoed more than the good stuff. So more people complaining than not. No one goes online to say "my windows 10 is working great". You search online and you see problems so you stay away, especially if you're not tech savvy.
MS released it super early without the features they truly want to include. These features will take time to complete, they are behind as usual.

Just because people don't want to upgrade to Win10, doesn't make them paranoid or afraid. Perhaps they just have their eyes opened. I personally like to keep my OS clean by myself. I don't need MS to do it for me. And I know what I should or shouldn't do. Why then I can't have that choice?

Upgraded it from Win7 and my experience with it wasn't really good. Yeah...sure, you can configure it to your liking, which I did right of the bat, especially with privacy settings (which in default mode pretty much registers everything you do on your computer). They say, that it happens, to make Cortana experience better, but I've heard that BS before. That's the first red flag. You may not be concerned about your privacy in the internet, but I am. And I care about how much personal information leaks out through my connection. Another thing is the mobile nature of this OS. I know they want to unify Windows 10 among all the devices, but there is a reason, that people don't like mobile version of Windows, and I don't want that on my PC. Another thing is compatibility, bugs that are constantly popping out on the screen. Sure, it's relatively new OS, but not much is being done with it in terms of improvement (in my eyes). Which made me revert back to Win7. Now there's another red flag. It messed up my whole Win7 to the point, where I had to do the wipe and put new version of OS on my drive. What is that all about? Punishment for going back to older OS? Or was it just an accident? At this point I don't really care anymore, but my experience with Win10 is not a pleasant one. And final red flag is literally forcing people to upgrade, by making DX12 exclusive to Win10 (and most likely this is just the start, there are more libraries down the pipeline, probably NET Framework will be next). This is ultimate BS. Why I can't stay with what I like? Why all of a sudden the choice is gonna be taken away from me? And why can't You understand that? You wanna blindly follow MS and eat everything they feed you with? That's fine. Your choice. But that doesn't mean everyone else have to. This is another corporate trick, abusing the fact, that they are at the moment dominating the market share as an OS. On the other hand...if Sony could "hack" DX12 to make it work on PS4, there are people out there, who will do the same for Win7. And I really hope Steam OS is gonna stay away from Windows in general, for Valve's own good. MS these days is nothing but a bad news. They bury everything they touch. First Xbone, now Windows Phone, and next in line is Win10.

It's no longer a game where they can get away with sitting back and relaxing because they have no competition. So now they are in need of innovation. And all these companies are shooting for similar things. So in the end consumers/enterprises win big. MS is even going linux. At my company everything customer facing is linux/solaris. The office stuff runs on Windows. So they are adapting to all scenarios.
I just don't think MS will ever be irrelevant.
Although the free windows 10 on devices under 10 inches is a good step forward. I think they would be better off giving windows 10 free to OEMs on any size device. Don't profit from OEMs, these guys are the ones putting your stuff out there. Profit from your services.

The shares are not who installed and reverted back but who is actually running it. The problem with SteamOS is garnering developers. You see Consoles out sell PC gaming by insane amounts. Look up the stats. Xbox has directX and even PS4 has its own hacked up version of directX api. Now, vulcan could change that, but Sony would have to embrace it.
The only people that don't like Windows 10 are the hardcore paranoid types. It's a fact. All the media attention has also caused fear in people even though it has been proven wrong countless times. The bigger issue is that most people out there in that 43% market share are just regular users who either have so much malware and other bs on their PC's that they can't even get the windows 10 update, or are too scared that it will mess up their already functioning PC. I know my friends parents have laptops, and they want windows 10 but they don't get any of the updates. Likely windows 7 is messed up on their system. This is the big problem with old windows versions. They can be changed around and messed up easily with some software. Software that changes files, permissions, doesn't uninstall properly, leave things in registry. Windows 10 just wants to fix all that stuff. Make it a more reliable OS that JUST WORKS. Kind of like you know Apple stuff. But they are doing it in a more open manner and can achieve it easily with virtualization of the w32 subsystem. So really w32 will always be there but it will not be able to mess with the whole OS as it will be contained. The techies don't make up the larger portion. In fact, the techies could go windows 10 and customized it to their hearts content since they know how to.
And now look at steam hardware statistics. This month Windows 10 will overtake windows 7. It is literally almost tied at this moment. Gamers like windows 10 because it really does improve performance. It did for me. So you expect all these gamers to go SteamOS? Valve would be smarter to integrate SteamOS as part of Windows 10. It can be done. And the benefit would be all the games would run.
UWP is just a platform with a specific API. This API is being built for the future to match and surpass what w32 offers. It's obviously in its early phases but it will become better. There's nothing scary about it. Telemetry is all configurable. Basic telemetry is required if you want to make a better OS. It does not collect any info about you but OS level issues so that it can be fixed and made better with patches. This also does versioning and other things that keep the OS up to date and running well. This is what the majority of consumers want. A great running OS and without worrying about viruses/malware. The store is the best place for regular people who don't want to go fussing around with different download sites and configurations. It's one click installing. OpenSuse has 1 click installing too. It's nothing new. The majority of consumers can at least have less worry that they are messing up their PC because now they get it straight from MS. And UWP's security features allow for it to contain any issues.
I just hope MS extends the free offer because some people may regret not going windows 10 once it reaches its potential.
I'm quite open minded. I don't have any reservations about switching OS's on phones/pc's if something out there is better for me. But MS does seem to be going in the right path. Things have changed with Satya. MS still has a bad rep from the old days. Even CEOs of other companies are saying MS has changed big time. And they like it.

Just tried Steam OS... and to be honest it's way but way too green to be even considered as alternative to Windows, it's just slow in most games. When Ubuntu came out, some point out that linux distro could steal MS marketshare... that was in 2004 and nothing of that happen. I won't put too much faith in Steam OS and some PC gaming oem initially were enthusiastic with Steam OS and now they just ship PC gaming rigs with Windows.
Many tried to predict the death of Windows since the 90's and failed.

However, Google is competing with MS on the enterprise level and cloud. I know for a fact that MS is discounting EAs (Enterprise agreements) bigtime just to keep customers and if this continues, it damages its profitability and they will have to review their strategy. Am saying this as i have facts and not trying to analyze the future. Microsoft with Satya's vision is to focus in MS services and cloud, as there is the risk of losing users in case they do not focus on their core business which is at risk from mighty Google.

If any of those two finish it up before MS does its "move", then people will instantly abandon Windows (well most of them at least). They are trying to shove Win10 down people's throats with stuff like DX12 exclusivity etc. but people don't care. True, recent news shows Win10 taking around 20% of the market share, but Win7 stays strong above 60% (I think it's 63% atm). On top of that, those 20% are reserved copies, they don't include how many people went back to Win7 disappointed by the application nature of Win10 (it's far from being OS). Other software? Office? Have you heard of Open Office? What I'm saying is, it looks like people are getting tired of Microsoft's dominance in OS realm, because they've been abusing it for years. We all put up with it, simply because there is no decent alternatives. But they are around the corner. Sure, Windows will probably remain in enterprise world, but the moment Valve or Google will have a customer ready OS, Microsoft will be pushed out of the homes (and that's a big chunk of money for MS).

Windows 10 is bigger than "phone". People keep seeing it from the perspective of the phone which MS can't compete and never will. But they can create a new category like the laptop 2-in-1's with phones. So phones would really be sold in Computer sections of best buy, etc.. And eventually phone stores may start carrying it too if it becomes popular enough. But OEMs could create any devices, including Consoles. Windows 10 is still not where Satya wants it to be. They are not worried about the phone space much. It's also why they can drop 50% of their users from getting windows 10 and not care. In spring 2017 they will be releasing their device line along with windows 10 in the state they want it to be. They are building for the future not for the present. They are simply trying to maintain some relevance while they are doing that.
The biggest work they are doing is around Visual studio and revolutionizing the way developers create work. You have to think about how all these languages and operating systems are out there and having to have to develop for all of them is a lot of work and investment. If you could centralize everything and allow for all platforms to be targeted without rewriting everything, it could change the landscape.
I'm not saying Windows 10 will become huge overnight, but it will be one of the major os's no matter what. And it will be device agnostic. The features included allow for any type of hardware to be developed for it. It could lead to more innovation in the OEM space. And Google seems to agree with MS's method and are working on something similar. Google has the advantage though due to market share. If they finish their work before MS then MS will fail to get people to move over in the consumer space. But MS is targeting enterprises right now and building contracts because that's the most important part for them.
MS will not fail even if windows 10 doesn't garner enough users. They are still huge in the cloud, enterprise and on the major mobile platforms (ios and android). They are a software company. People are using office everywhere, it's not just a windows product anymore. Same for pretty much all their services.

The rise of mobiles was the first shot, Nadella merely delay the inevitable. Once android becomes a true desktop OS + iOS merges with MacOS there would be no need for Windows.
Good riddance I say too. We only need one close sourced demon (apple products), two is too much (as it was for decades). Microsoft's lack of taste finally cough up with them and beating them in the a$$. 50 years is a good run for a company though, they're to finally be let to rest in the following decade or two.. so excited.

Let's not mention the complete and utter lack of apps, and existing ones that are lesser than their iOS or Android counterparts.
