They serve no real purpose other than non-conventional looks; they add no extra functionality to a phone; and they add no extra value to a phone. (phones with curved screen edges are just like Motorola's round screen phones. Utterly useless and gimmicky)

When this comes out everyone will forget about LG's modular design phone or Apple's Force Touch. Samsung is innovating and changing the game once again, can't wait to see the first working prototype.

Anonymous, 04 Apr 2016the 5" is a diagonal corner to corner measurement. The scre... moreThat's only if the screen use 4:3 aspect ratio. Since smartphone usually use 16:9, you have to recalculate your math.

                In display size, height can be acquired with: height = H * diagonal / SQRT(W^2 + H^2)
And width can be acquired with: width = W / H * height
Where width, height, and diagonal are the screen size in inches, while W and H are screen size in pixels.

                So, phone with 5 inches, 720p screen will have a height of: 1280 * 5 / SQRT(720^2 + 1280^2) = 4.36 inches and width of: 720 / 1280 * 4.36 = 2.45 inches.

When the phone is unfolded (assuming there are no additional screen area), we doubled the width and we get 4.90. Then, we get the new diagonal with: SQRT(4.90^2 + 4.36^2) = 6.56 inches.

I suppose, they will add additional hidden area to round it to 7 inches and change the aspect ratio of the resulting tablet to 4:3 (not exactly, but quite close).

If they are more than 14 years old and they don't know this stuff (yeah, you learn about it in 6th - 7th grade) then there's no point in trying to teach them something that their brain can't logically and/or naturally comprehend. These are the people who come up with uneducated opinions about various things, thus making their opinions worthless.

The sad thing is you cannot take away their right to speak, even though that would be the first and most logical thing to do.

If you double the screen area (by folding it out) the screen would be 6"x4". The diagonal on that is 7.2". So it's not a cop out, it's maths.

Non-yet. But hmm. be watchful! coz when this phone comes out?, undoubtedly, Apple will hastily rush into the US courts to bombard Samsung with cases, HERE and THERE! You know what? instead of getting themselves busy hiring great innovators and engineers to possibly make the next future big-thing, the iPhone 8 or so?, what Apple did, and is currently doing, is engaging themselves a lot in hiring great lawyers, seeking journalists to give there phone product a good and compelling reviews no-matter-what, greatly hoping to make the tech world like buffoons, and possibly; even finding juries that can be bought just to overturn sales, at-least in the US.
