AnonD-463876, 16 Apr 2016To each his own, hope you're satisfied with your next choice. Thank you. I hope you will too. And just to second what I was talking about. In the recent review of P9, they test Kirin with its "inferior" Mali GPU. Sure, numbers show some underperformance compared to Qualcomm, but...and here's the best part - no matter what you throw at it right now, it won't make it stutter. And it runs much cooler than Snapdragon with Adreno setup. I'll take that over top speeds, that I won't even benefit from.

I don't mind using the top end CPU, providing it will work well. If 820 will start heating up randomly and on a simplest tasks as 810, Qualcomm can lose its prestigious tech appearance. I've been let down with its last generation (especially when they were promising to make it right with 808 and it didn't really happen), hence I'm looking the other way this year. I like to keep my mind open (and to be honest, for my own use, I don't really need SD820 in my phone to enjoy it). Sure, every SoC is gonna heat up under heavier use, it's just that fine line between phone being warm and uncomfortable.

AnonD-507785, 14 Apr 2016Well...according to many services (now including GSMA too) ... moreWhy not use a powerful CPU if it exists and is available to you? If you can't afford one of the top phones or don't game a lot then get a phone with a 652 in it instead, it's actually getting a lot of attention now that more companies like LG and HTC are using it in their cheaper models that's based on their flagship units. As for overheating there aren't enough tech blogs or users complaining about it, I'm sure all SoC's overheat and throttle on occasion but it's not a serious deal-breaking issue like it was with the 810. For reliability, flashing and graphics it's Qualcomm all the way, for performance it's Exynos, the rest are just there for competition sake.

That's the problem. Numbers game is a doom of today's mobile technology. And a very small number of people actually stop and think: "Do I really need all this raw power in the phone?". You may have different opinion and praise Qualcomm for their chipset, but I'll check out either Intel, Kirin or Helio this time around. I'm disappointed with Snapdragon's last generation and it looks like I will be with this generation too.

If I were you I'd get the Mi 5, as for me I just updated my phone to Cyanogen OS 13 so that'll keep me satisfied for now until better, cheaper phones arrive in the market.

I'm a bit more sceptical about Snapdragon though, because of that 810 messed up model. I happen to own the phone with it, and honestly sometimes it just heats up on the stupidest little thing to the point, where it is uncomfortable. And it's a random occurrence. So I'm actually thinking about giving a shot to either Kirin or Helio processors this time around, just to have that comparison (though I'm still thinking seriously about Mi5).

To me numbers (SoC and GPU tes... moreWhen I buy a phone I usually look at specs like RAM and storage and screen resolution/display tech, then price, there has to be a perfect balance between the two. All decent phones these days have good cameras, as for speakers I only use them at home where it's quiet and when I'm out I'd just plug in some random headphones, though I rarely use them in public these days. And you're right it's not just about the benchmarks, Kirin SoC just doesn't do it for me, and Qualcomm has been very reliable so far so I'll stick with them for the time being. It also plays nice with custom ROM's so that's a plus and it's graphically superior which is great because I don't have worry about certain games and graphic intensive apps running well on my phone in the near future. I own a OPO and took a chance with them when they had a shitty record with customer service, still no complaints and I'm sure the Mi 5 won't be any different, unless they send me a messed up unit. And the P9 Lite is heavily downgraded, as a spec-head I can't get that phone lol

To me numbers (SoC and GPU tests), that are being so focused on these days, don't matter. I want my device to have 3 things (besides obvious phone function and normally working OS): decent camera, good quality sound (not necessarily speakers, but headphones) and nice, vibrant screen, so I won't turn my head away every time I look at it. And that's it. I can't be bothered with 1000 points (or whatever) number difference on some test, simply because I won't see the difference in my daily use anyway. So in my book, every phone, that can do those 3 things I've mentioned on a good level, is competing with the "big boys". And I thought about importing Mi5 too, but the thing is, if you ever have a problem with it, there won't be any official service in Europe, so that means shipping to China. It can take 3 months before you get it back, and that's with the assumption, that customs won't be making a problem about it. But anyway...I think P9 will be good enough. Need to wait and see how it's gonna sound, but other than that, Huawei is my pick this year...for now. And as an answer for your question: "Why couldn't they make a version with an average Sony camera sensor in it to vastly reduce the price?"

A lot of... moreYeah but what's stopping me from going with one of Huawei's cheaper Chinese competitors or forking over a few more bucks to the big brands. I can import a Mi 5 online and have it shipped across the world to my doorstep and it'll still be a lot cheaper than the P9's entry model value. Why couldn't they make a version with an average Sony camera sensor in it to vastly reduce the price? I'm honestly not a fan of Huawei's phones mainly because of their custom SoC and weak graphics capabilities but that's besides the point. The fact is they think they can compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung (and as you can see with the P9 they're bold enough to do it), maybe in the low-to-mid tier market but not when it comes to flagships.

They've announced it at the launch in London. Here in UK P9 is going for £450 (Galaxy S7 was £560) and P9+ is priced £550 (S7Edge was £630). I'm alright with that. Ehhh...never mind that. No matter what, both of us will pick the devices suitable for each other, regardless the price I guess. Which is totally fine.

A lot of Chinese manufacturers stepped up their game in quality department, hence higher prices. Huawei P9 at the moment is (probably) the best Chinese brand smartphone available worldwide, that's why the price is higher (still attractive enough for me, to seriously think about it). When you compare launch prices of all flagships you've mentioned, you will see, that Huawei is going at least 100 less for its model than the competition. That's a lot of cash in your pocket. I'm not sure how HTC will do. It probably will be a good one, but they will ask for the same amount as S7Edge (which will bury them even deeper). Other Chinese brands (sadly including Xiaomi), are mainly released for Asian market, with very limited availability worldwide. That's what makes them cheaper. All phones come from southern Asia, what matters is, how many middlemen are between you as a customer, and manufacturer. Trust me, Huawei's price is justified by this Laica camera apparatus alone. Just have a look at the price difference between Sony camera (which sensors everyone is using right now) and Laica.

And other companies? Like Xiaomi Mi5? Half the price of S7? Despite very similar specs. Same goes to Oppo, Asus, Oneplus, Meizu etc. They all hold significantly lower prices (even if from now and then you will have a weird, highly priced phone, that doesn't make sense). But that exceptions don't make it a rule. Do you really know what you're talking about? C'mon now. Don't expect $200 phones with flagship internals, just because they come from China.
