It's odd for a customer wanting to do a "wireless" tap-n-go transaction on a swipe-only terminal, and I can see many non-techy shop owners scratching their heads at the thought.

If you need to argue with the shop owner on what it is you're wanting to do, then that defeats the purpose - paying is supposed to be fast and simple, not torture.

Still specific Apple pay setup is needed, so no dedicated hardware (if there is existing contactless terminal). Furthermore, Samsung Pay is more advanced technology, not only does the same thing, but as well works everywhere where Apple pay does not - as it doesn't even requires the contactless terminal.

And understandably why. Crapple pay is not really smart technology... well it is not a technology at all. Everything is done on retailer side and nothing impressive on crapples side. By enabling crapple pay Bank needs to build capacity to receive encrypted token codes and the retailers needs to have specific terminals to transfer the token code. Even thought it is encrypted it is not very safe and requires huge investments from bank's and retailer's side.. what apple does is just saves the picture of your card on the phone and transmits the token via limited NFC transmitter. Retarded... not other word fits better. It is something like phone banking where you call and quote your reference number. In contracts Samsung pay is significant development on Samsung side, both in terms of software and hardware. Requires no support from Bank's or retailers side and use all existing terminals... That is what you call - cutting edge technology. I wish all the banks have ignored crapple retarded stuff.

When logic comes to play and not fanboyism or shall I say, iSheepnism, Samsung Pay is miles ahead of this service.

Banks, especially CBA, are reluctant to jump on board because of the high fees and the fact that they've had a somewhat functional mobile wallet already (iPhone via sticker), and the former was apple's mistake, because now that Google and Samsung are offering the service for free, it's hard for Apple to revert the decision. That's what you get for launching the service before everyone else.

CBA, NAB, etc will eventually bite the bullet and work out a deal. Apple did with China, and their interchange fees are WAY smaller. Ok, fair, Oz also has 2% of China's population, but anyway... the principle counts.

In both Canada and Australia, banks are much more tightly regulated, which has afforded them considerable power and market traction. When developing its payment system, Apple had no choice but to insert itself into the countries' existing payment cycle, rather than attempt to create a new one.
Big banks in Australia and Canada have already rolled out mobile payment solutions for Android devices that run through their own mobile apps. Most of these products require users to open the bank's app, authenticate using a password or PIN number, and make a payment at an NFC-based merchant terminal.

So this is why Apple failed with apple pay outside the States.

harlekkin, 06 Apr 2016How so, because not everyone has got NFC enabled terminals?Since launching in Canada and Australia in November 2015, Apple Pay has been met with limited success, for one main reason: Only American Express credit card holders can use it.

In short, availability: Around one in 10 Canadians own an Amex card, and only a proportionally small number of independent merchants accept the cards. The same is true in Australia.

That Apple pay is one big fail outside United States. On presentation they showed many countries where you can use Apple pay, but they didn't mention that payments with apple pay is very limited in these countries.
