Anonymous, 17 Apr 2016Lmao. They did it because they were surprised by apple. Good oneI guess you don't follow hardware development very closely. Everyone that does that knows what a surprise Apples 64-bit SoC was (read up on Anandtech for example). No matter how much it actually meant in practice for the end user its was very important for PR. There are tones of articles about this, just google it.

                For example: http://www.zdnet.com/article/apples-64-bit-chip-hit-qualcomm-in-the-gut/

"The 64-bit Apple chip hit us in the gut," says a Qualcomm employee to HubSpot. "Not just us, but everyone, really. We were slack-jawed, and stunned, and unprepared. It’s not that big a performance difference right now, since most current software won’t benefit. But in Spinal Tap terms it’s like, 32 more, and now everyone wants it"

Qualcomm had great success with their own CPU design (Krait) before 810. Now they had to rush do get something out and they could not wait until its own design (Kryo, or whatever name it had be that time) was ready.

AnonD-473183, 17 Apr 2016The 810 uses many smaller cores because Qualcomm is targeti... moreNo, Qualcomm choose to go with ARM reference core design (with smaller cores) because they we surprised by Apples fast movement to 64-bit CPU. They did not have a choice really. They needed to get a 64-bit CPU out to the market and their own design was not ready. Again, saying its an easy task to design a CPU just shows how little you know, it takes a long time.

And your talk about Apple not designing anything just does not make sense. You acknowledge that they keep on acquiring hardware companies, what do you think they do with these companies really? Of course they do hardware designing. Again look at the memory controller (which is their own design). If it was just bought as a finished component then everyone would use it since its still far ahead of the other companies solutions...even 7 month after the release iPhone 6S.
