Apple calls an iPhone 4 press conference, iOS 4.0.1 closing in

15 July, 2010
It was about time. Apple got quite a hit by the wave of user discontent about the iPhone 4 antenna issues. It's been 3 weeks since the premiere of iPhone 4, but it is tomorrow that Apple will confess. Or not...

As for the US tech blogs, sorry, but they simply don’t have a clue what they are talking about. The US tech media is well known globally for being ignorant about mobile generally – they live in such an insular, inward looking world, and are highly defensive and protective about home-grown technology (Android, iPhone).

The truth is the N8 makes current and rumoured iPhone and Android devices look like over-priced toys. The truth hurts – it hurts Android and iPhone fans, and it hurts US tech blogs who love their home-grown tech. So they slag off and do down non US tech. I’ve seen it lots before. Luckily the US is actually not a very important mobile market at all, only about 8% of world’s mobile users live there. So I think we can live with the US, loud and proud as they are, not appreciating Nokia technology. It’s their loss.

I wanna be billionaire so freakin bad, so I could sue apple with a battery of lawyers and lawsuits, and then I'll box Steve Job's flimsy face.

Anonymous, 15 Jul 2010And how is iphone4 shallow? It's 5mp camera outclasses one... moreYou ask who will buy a device if you know its not working. No one. But obviously those 1.7 million buyers bought it before they know its not working, thus over more than a million of refunds.

It is believed Apple will not want to go through a costly and embarrassing recall, despite lawsuits, a poor review from Consumer Report and growing user complaints.

But investors will be looking for a fuller explanation of what analysts are calling a "minor issue" that has managed to cause a media firestorm.

Apple has blamed a software glitch that overstates network strength but others say the antenna on the redesigned device is at fault.

Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross expects Apple to use the briefing to provide a remedy to users experiencing the problem, and to redirect attention back to the iPhone 4's strengths.

"We do not expect a recall and believe Apple will quickly move past this issue," Ms Cross said.

She added that Apple could add a thin coating over the antenna in future models to fix the issue.

The furore over the signal-strength flaws of the latest iPhone model has hurt Apple's shares ahead of its quarterly results next week.

Since June 28 - days after the launch, when complaints about faulty reception began surfacing on IT websites - Apple has lost about $16bn (£10bn) in market value, with at least some of that related to the iPhone controversy.

The stock fell as much as 2.1% on Thursday, before closing down 0.5% at $251.45 (£162.87) on the Nasdaq exchange.

"We do believe that Apple needs to be more proactive in identifying and addressing the issues for the iPhone 4," BMO Capital Markets analyst Keith Bachman said.

"A real risk is if the press keeps talking about this issue, iPhone 4 growth could slow."

Some analysts suggest Apple could simply offer free protective cases for the device - which prevent the signal interference - at a cost to the company of around $2 (£1) each.

That solution could cost as much as $45m (£29m), according to one estimate. An in-store repair programme could run to as much as an estimated $300m (£194m).

Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Apple engineers had warned chief executive Steve Jobs in the early design phase of the iPhone 4 about the antenna design.

But Apple spokesman Steve Dowling said the Bloomberg report is "simply not true", and later declined to comment on the Journal report.

Apple has bowed to pressure in the past to placate consumers.

In 2007, after Apple slashed the price of the original iPhone two months after it went on sale, the company offered a $100 (£65) store credit to appease angry buyers.

"The brash confidence that made Apple so endearing in its early days has crossed over into arrogance, and it isn't flattering — indeed, in a dozen years of covering the tech industry, I've never seen a company draw this much vitriol, not even Microsoft. Apple needs to take itself down a peg or two (or three), admit its mistakes — hey, we're all human (you too, Steve Jobs) — and say the magic words: "We're sorry." Go ahead, you can do it."-Ben Patterson

Don't expect Steve Jobs or anyone else to throw the iPhone 4's stainless-steel antenna band under the bus. Even if Apple admits to some signal loss when the iPhone is held, uh, incorrectly, I'm sure Jobs and/or his lieutenants will insist that overall, the iPhone 4 boasts better wireless reception than any previous iPhone. They're a proud, stubborn bunch in Cupertino, and they're not going to diss their latest iPhone openly.
