First of all, the speaker doubles as the earpiece so it still is front facing. And most of moto's phones have mono front facing speakers anyway, even higher end ones, ala MXF. The modules are not the only thing available here, you have typical Moto maker accessories like previous generation smartphones, and the modules. The Android approach here is basically the same, but now the camera has a pro mode. Big deal. If you guys claim that a oneplus 2 is reasonable size and say this is too big when dimensionally they are pretty much the EXACT SAME size is skewed logic. Moto has been doing poorly here lately not because of the customer support issues due to the restructuring and lenovo's reckoning that their Moto brand will be dominant around the world and ZUK would be dominant in China, but because really, Moto hasn't changed enough. People are acting like this new Moto g is a major departure from what they were doing, but it's the same crap Moto has been releasing for four years. It hasn't changed enough. This top end Moto will sell if done right, because even though it retains what makes Motorola, well, Motorola, it opens the door for other capability to be added on to said device, at one's choice. This thing literally doesn't have to be a modular phone. They made them thin because the modules, especially the one that they will most likely advertise the most and will sell the most-the battery module-would make the phone too thick if the thickest phone of the series was much more than 7 mm.

yes for us (techy Nerd) 7mm is thin enough and we choose thickness with increased battery capacity over super thin profile.
but in reality, super slim phone are gorgeous to look at and many people are impressed, like and buy them.

WTF Motorola?! You used to be the unique smartphone maker, and now you became those same boring vendor, with black-silver-gold product? Come on, I miss the creative aspect of Motorola, with so many experimental smartphone material like kevlar, bamboo, ballistic nylon, etc.
While others trying hard to make the thinnest smartphone, you're the only one to make the most ergonomic one! You have your own path, and huge loyal fans!

Battery is kept low to reduce the thickness. And you have option of Moto mod to get much higher battery backup. If you are going to use the Moto mod... Its going to be awesome. If not, then phone is not worth it.

5.2 mm thin is silly. I can't believe Motorola's latest move is to try to relive the ultra thin days of the Razr. That was a different era in phones.
Motorola has taken one of the nicest designs out there, in the last few versions of the Moto X with it's curved back. And instead made a thin, but otherwise giant phone, that looks like just another HTC One/iPhone rip off. All the while they are dropping signature features like front facing stereo speakers, custom Moto Maker backs, more reasonable screen size. The Moto Z will be a pointless phablet with no desirable differentiation from other flagship phones.
