Cortex-A73 will improve flagship battery life, mid-range performance

30 May, 2016
The new CPU design from ARM offers a performance boost to go with the power saving. It will also make octa-core mid-range A53 chipsets a thing of the past.

6-core should have been the norm last year if not for that big-a$$ a72. And although a53 is successful, we should have been seeing its successor in late quarter this year. 2 a73 + 4 a5x for mid-range and 2 a73 + 2 a5x(though awkward) for entry level.

For the GPU, Mali-G71 is the successor to the T880. With bumped shader cores, it's expected to boost almost half of what T880 can do. It is also Vulcan-ready for API. I'm worried about fillrate as this is an architectural design in nature(fingers crossed) . I hope die size shrinks too while retaining/improving performance. Bodes well for smartphone future.

All in all, I'm excited :)

ssbatman21, 30 May 2016no it isn't ..... kyro has been very successful for qualco... moreSamsung and Qualcomm will use the a73 and make their own custom core from it, like they did this year.

A73 will probably first show itself at the end of this year when the successor for the huawei mate 8 is out, since that was the first to use a72 cores. But unless huawei get their act together and give a decent GPU I won't even consider them really.

Maybe you weren't paying attention, but Intel just exited the mobile SoC market almost completely two weeks ago.

They will perhaps try a come back now, but all the Taiwanese/Korean/Chinese/Indian phone makers are now moving over to Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Intel Atom processors for Mobiles are - for now - dead.

kyro has been very successful for qualcomm so its very likely gonna use next gen or higher clocked kyro cores again in sd823
even exynos has der own mongoose cores now,
mediatek and kirin are the only ones who will use a73 in der flagship chipsets.....
we might see a73 in mid rangers like sd650/652 successor....
