T-Mobile sells most smartphones of any carrier in the US in Q1

01 June, 2016
This is a big deal because just over three years ago, T-Mobile was the number 4 carrier in the US. Nobody even wanted to deal with switching carriers because every carrier, including T-Mobile, had stopped offering unlimited data and their plans become so unclear. While Sprint was the only carrier at the time that offered unlimited data, its network was so bad in some areas, there wasn’t even contest.

If this sounds like history repeats itself, it should be noted that what Huawei is doing now is akin to what Apple was doing when they first got in the smartphone game - combine the best features of what everyone else has to offer and package it in a beautiful device.

      > Nice screen
      > removable storage
      > beautiful and slender device
      > giant battery
      > price matches with performance

Now let's take a step back and assess how much of those Motorola RAZR flip phones and Nokia candybars cost back then...about $500-600 and they couldn't do 1/3rd of what Apple was offering at the time. So really, you don't need a degree in accounting to see the disparity between what Huawei is offering versus all the major players.

They don't need to watch what Huawei's doing. The simple fact that the huawei mate 8 (a $500 phone UNLOCKED) could wipe the floor with the likes of the galaxy s7edge, htc 10, lg g5, sony xperia XP, etc, is enough for anyone with half a brain to understand that the consumers aren't naive about their purchasing power compare to 5yrs ago.

This looks accurate. All three big companies are neck-in-neck, with Sprint lagging behind slightly.

I believe it is much more important to mention that the only one of established brands have grown in Q1 ... and that is Samsung. That 2.4% might be what all newcomers are selling combined. That is huge achievement for established brand in such saturated market. It is easy to make numbers for brands like Zoostorm and Blu... because obviously if you sold 1000 phone last Q and you sold 4000 this Q... it is 400%, but for Samsung that 2,4% might be extra million devices.

I doubt sony can do anything with these overprice half-ass phones. The U.S market already forgot about Sony long ago.

Nowadays carriers are basically sell phones business. It's different from before, now minutes, texts, data are unlimited so what's there to sell besides cellphone.

Yeah, interesting point about Huawei, the nexus really helped as a walking billboard. But Sony couldn't do the same with their overpriced phones. You can only give overpriced phones if you at least have marketing on your side.

It's a shame the report didn't have the percentage of sales by brand that were sold through carriers vs without carriers.
