Seriously MT6752 would have been better choice for this Jolla phone, because of its faster processor and more powerful GPU, but, sadly, it seems Mediatek no longer makes those in favor of newer and "better" MT6753.

Google threatens to remove the right to Android branding and the gapps. In my opinion that's why OnePlus backed away from Cyanogenmod. Any vendor that doesn't have access to play store is dead in the water (at least outside of China).
That's also why Microsoft is leaning towards a guerrilla approach to getting ROMS on hardware. They can port Windows 10 to any phone they want and let the end user install it, thereby thwarting Google. That is, if anyone other than me will install it...

Perhaps one day a hardware manufacturer will take a platform agnostic approach like Microsoft is taking with their software. Meaning one phone is released, and you get your choice of Android, Windows, Ubuntu, or Sailfish, so that you can always choose the best option for you.

RC255, 07 Jun 2016Big fat WRONG. The Mediateks of late have been excellent ac... moreI agree with almost everything you mentioned on Mediatek with the exception of the Helio x20 (and perhaps x25) as seen in the recently released Zopo Speed 8 and Meizu Pro 6.
Both smartphones had shown a not-so-impressive battery stamina but one should not fully account it to the Helio x20 alone. There are yet several things to consider like the number of phones present (currently, just 2), battery capacity (Meizu Pro 6 has ~2600mAh), software optimization or even the display (panel type, size and pixel count) before we could come up with just a rough conclusion.
It's all speculations as of today and we have to wait until then.

I still wait for some OEM that would make camera-centric model with sailfishOS that would have 12-16mpx front camera and call it "Selfish Sailfish" :D

I'm not aware of any that could be called midrange priced, even the OnePlus 3 is officially high end now.
Mediatek are doing a great job and won't be left in the dirt, as you claim, especially when you were the one who reported on seeing them in more and more phones, which means their business plan is obviously working very well indeed.

Here I am looking at all these comments about mediatek chipsets and yet the page is not even about that. It's about the most advanced Sailfish running phone.
Talk about being relevant.
Anyway if this is the most advanced Sailfish phone so far then I'm worried as the specs or features of this phone shout lower midrange all over the place.
Don't they have faith in Sailfish to at least make an impact in the market with an at least upper midrange smartphone?

There are only two other Android manufacturers that use chip better or competitive than Qualcomm, which are Exynos and Kirin . The reason it sells like a hot cakes it is dirty cheap. It is the only and sole reason Mediatek chips are sold in mega bulks.
I have seen many attractive phone propositions only to be ruined Mediatek chip.

Unless Mediatek have something unique/lucrative to offer OEMs, as of this point of time I honestly dont see them winning over Qualcomm in the long run.
Which is great news for us end users and customers. As such a healthy competition will only drive up our options and lessen the brunt of purchasing a new phone(s) on our wallets.

They can't compete on max power but then they don't need to, they aren't aiming for powering flagship phones but are happy to stick with lower and mid range devices. They provide more than enough power and efficiency for any type of user - even for heavy gamers. Which - amazingly - is why you're seeing more of them. Why pay extra for something that does the same job at the same level?
As for the phone, it isn't pretty. That huge camera hump will cause a lot of unnecessary damage and that amount of bezel - especially on a white phone - makes it look cheaply built - which it is but the designers shouldn't want you to think/see that.
The specs are...adequate I guess for the lower price range.
Haven't had any 1st hand experience with SailfishOS as yet but it doesn't seem to be taking off by any means.

I see Mediatek chip being accommodated in more phones these days than Qualcomm. Big fat NO especially when OEM's half decent phones ruined by sub par to average chip.
