Facebook Messenger for Android now supports SMS

14 June, 2016
Today Facebook Messenger for Android has received an additional feature - support for SMS. You'll be able to send and receive SMS text messages from the app, provided you first set it up as your default SMS app. This is easily done though, and once you turn the feature on your Facebook Messenger communications will remain blue, while SMS messages will show up in purple.

AnonD-8219, 16 Jun 2016There is an option to hide your number...even if that option was available for any single SMS/MMS app, it will only work if your carrier offers that option and if paid the extra for it, if not, well the option could be turned on but wont work

I see this feature as a disadvantage. I currently use Messenger to chat because it is FREE via WiFi. By integrating SMS into the chat feature, I could get confused as I chat away. Leave SMS in my phonecall items and therefore I will know that it is a paid for event per SMS.

You must be a really sad person if you're still using Facebook. The years of 2012/2013 are over. Facebook is just a tool that takes advantage of the IT-uneducated masses.

This update has already been available in the Philippines for a while now, and I'm actually using Messenger as my default SMS app. Wonder why this report took so long to surface on this website.
