Hasselblad X1D is the company's first mirrorless medium format camera

23 June, 2016
Most people haven't seen medium format cameras in person as they are expensive and only really used by professionals. But other than the price they are also known to be quite big due to their sensor size. Hasselblad has been making medium format cameras for decades now and all their cameras are also fairly large.

Collaboration with Sony

Since 2012, Hasselblad has been marketing redesigned versions of Sony digital cameras.

At the 2012 photokina trade show in Germany, Hasselblad announced it would release a new mirrorless interchangeable-lens camera (MILC) using the Sony E-mount. The camera, called the Lunar, is based on the Sony NEX-7, including its 24.3 MP APS-C sensor, processing engine and user interface. The Lunar, which is marketed as an "ultimate luxury" model, was released in summer 2013.[20]

On 23 July 2013 Hasselblad announced the Stellar, a "luxury" compact digital camera based on the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100.

On February 3, 2014, Hasselblad introduced a restyled Sony A99 as Hasselblad HV. According to the company's press-release, their version of A99 is "tough as nails", featuring more robust construction than the original.[43]

On 26 November 2014, Hasselblad announced the Stellar II based on the DSC-RX100M2. As of now, there is no Stellar III or IV based on the already released DSC-RX100M3 and M4.

Unlike Leica in a similar partnership with Panasonic, Hasselblad doesn't make claims of reprogrammed image processing. The company, however, uses the same marketing strategy selling the OEM cameras under their brand at the prices two or three times higher than those of the original Sony cameras

Akinaro, 23 Jun 2016Eh, yes we hit the bottom, because you dont know history of... moreIt doesn't seem that you are familiar with the history of the Hasselblad company either. This year marks the 75th year of Hasselblad as a camera manufacturer. In that time, it established a reputation for producing some of the finest camera equipment available. After the founder's death, the company was sold to a conglomerate and changed hands more than once. Yes, a few years ago the parent company sought to cash in on the Hasselblad name by rebranding Sony cameras. Even while they were doing that, the company still offered high quality, high end professional products.

The new CEO of the company has publicly acknowledged the poor judgment of the company in the rebranding of products and stated unequivocally that Hasselblad will no longer do that. As for rebranding this particular camera, what Sony camera is this one based on? The a6000 as you suggested in another post? Hardly, as it's an aps-c sensor and does not use leaf shutter lenses. The a7 series again uses a different, smaller sensor. Some component pieces of either could be used, but that's hardly rebadging an existing camera and marking it up. What evidence do you have that there is some mystery Sony in the wings that has yet to be released that this Hasselblad camera was based on?

Hasselblad is fully capable of engineering a camera on their own. When they have collaborated on design and production of a camera with another company, they have always acknowledged that. Witness the xPan with Fuji as well the H1 with Fuji where Fuji still makes the lenses.

Akinaro, 23 Jun 2016How to sell Sony camera with just different name. I love h... moreThere is no doubt that it's a Sony sensor as it's the same sensor that is in the Phase One IQ 350 medium format back, the same sensor as in the Pentax 645Z and the Hasselblad H6D, but that is all the connection that Sony has to this camera.

This is a medium format sensor which is almost twice the size as the sensor in the Sony A7 cameras, much less the a6000 line with an apd-c sensor. So what is the connection to Sony here? What Sony interchangeable lens camera does Sony have that syncs flash at 1/2000 of a second? That capability alone is worth thousands as it saves on the cost and weight of lightning equipment.

bug, 23 Jun 2016Cheap crap, the body isn't even priced into 5 figures terri... moreBut can your D810 sync flash at 1/2000s like this Hasselblad? And that's full power strobes, at any aperture, not some HSS sync where you lose strobe power the more you go over the camera's sync speed. This is one of the main reasons for medium format.

All cameras are tools, and all of them involve trade offs. This camera is the first lightweight, easily portable digital medium format, and one of the least expensive medium format cameras as well. And it's the only sub $10K medium format that can sync flash that fast. That's pretty groundbreaking.

$13,985 for this camera. Considered cheap in the camera world. Only professional will buy this thing.

Joking aside, the 1/2000 min shutter speed is quite low (the Nikon D810 can do 1/8000).

They've Hasselblad H6D-100c for 4k video, this is top of line Photographic tool, and the users who buy this don't buy it to shoot videos. Which I bet you won't understand coz you're out there being the keyboard warrior and having no idea why every camera needs 4k, but it does according to you coz it's 2016.

mir, 23 Jun 2016The camera plus two lenses are already the price of a decen... moreThe Hasselblad H6D costs 32,000USD, this isn't for amateurs, it's aimed at those who are moving from DSLR to MF, Professionals. This is good for those who need MF and portability, H6D weighs atleast 2kg in itself. At the price X1D is perfectly priced for a decent spec's MF. The Pentax 645 is somewhat cheap, but it's still bulky. Those who say that it's too costly and mediocre specs, aren't ones who gonna be buying it. This will find its way to Dedicated Landscape and Portrait photographers. I see wedding photographers jumping in too.

PS: not aimed at you when you say it's costly, just a general context.

Akinaro, 23 Jun 2016How to sell Sony camera with just different name. I love h... moreI don't expect much from the comments section but we are really scraping the bottom of the barrel now. The X1D is as much as a Sony camera for using a Sony sensor as the Galaxy S7 is a Sony phone for using a Sony sensor. Sony is OEM for sensors for multiple companies. Hasselblad still has to make the camera around it to make the sensor work, including the software and hardware that processes those images. And this is a medium format sensor. I don't know which Sony A series camera out there has a medium format sensor. Hasselblad cameras are known for their image quality and craftsmanship. They are extensively used for high resolution product photography that goes in magazines and billboards. It's the only company that can claim to have its cameras being used on the moon by NASA. It has over 70 years of heritage and for that they charge the amount they do.

I love how they said that they gonna stop rebranding Sony camera and ask x10 more money for it, and still we are here...
They say that "its their sensor" but its just Sony sensor from updated A series

And looking at other companies that have custom bodies(aluminum/leather), whole package like that should cost about 1300$(without lenses)

But here we have device for celebrities, lawyers and drugdealers that spend 9k$ every week for pedicure... buying such camera is nothing...

And for people who would say "those are their money, they can buy what they want" its ok, its just proof that dump people exist and we can laugh from them, and we use that right :]

The camera plus two lenses are already the price of a decent small car. You really have to know how to take advantage of all the features on this camera to make the investment worthwhile.
