Good OS is not enough,
you need a good ecosystem and many apps to be able to compete.

just count how many failed mobile OS until today
    symbian
    winmo
    windowsphone
    firefox os
    tizen
    bada
    sailfish os
    blackberry os
    ubuntu mobile
    web os
its not about the hardware and price. its about apps market.
no apps = no user no one buy your phones
no users = no body make apps and no body buying the phone
no body buying the phone = no profits
all the CEO needs to understand that without apps eco systems, a phone OS is death
just look at microsoft and BB with so many fans behind their back, in the end without the capability to offers more abilities to the smartphones, they are all just fall
people want something more like a mini laptop in their hand and that is android or something that can level their social status and easy to use like ios, offering them with cheap plastic but with ios locked feels and can't do anything like android just like WP and BB10 = instant failure
but still i hope there will be a 3 horse race, more options mean better benefits for us the user

The only reason all of the Chinese phonemakers have had a successful run in the smartphone segment is because of Android. You take Android away, and suddenly we're back in 2008 when Chinese 'smartphones' were synonymous with iPhone Clone dumbphones. Huawei isn't stupid.

You do not need googles' permission to use Android Open Source Project. All you have to do, is not use any google apps and anyone is free to use it just like how Amazon is doing (removing all traces of google apps etc). You do not need to comply with Android guidelines if you remove all google stuff. Nobody can restrict anything, not even google, so I don't know what the CEO is talking about.. AOSP will always be free for everyone to use without restriction

Sure, but will Huawei itself stay open? Or will they start locking customer to Huawei ecosystem?

Anonymous, 25 Jun 2016No one would even use their os not even samsungs no matter ... moreWouldn't be the greatest hit, but people would use it, just like they use Tizen (which is quite successful).
Any in-house OS has potential as long as they use the same approach as Tizen. The sistem is very similar to Android (easy to switch) and there is support for native Android apps.

But of course this is only good enough for low and mid-rangers, flagships simply need established system.

No one would even use their os not even samsungs no matter how big

Android is very different than symbian os
It would take something new not similar to switch to a different os.. with an already established ecosystem i doubt they will succeed in this.. who woulf develop apps for them?

EMUI 4.1 has changed so much since the older EMUI's, i like their skin but more Android like is always a welcome.
