Cirrus Logic announces MFi headset development kit for Lightning headphones

01 July, 2016
Following rumors of Apple shifting to Lightning port for all its audio needs, Cirrus Logic has jumped the gun in releasing a development kit that should make it easier for OEMs to make Lightning-based audio accessories.

ash, 02 Jul 2016worst part is, a common sense... you cannot listen to music... moreI agree with U. If we can't listen without charging then it's a disaster. Can Y cable help it? I know nothing about Type-C, conversely the older USB port working fine with ext DAC and charging.

Hope they put 2 USB ports on the devices (Chinese brand will have it first).

The good news is that any released phones will have massive support for many ext DAC. This is a huge leap for audio enthusiast. Many people forget about harmonization between DAC and headphone. Good headphones won't really sing without correct/proper DAC (and optionally amplification).

That's the reason why some of the audio adapters for docking stations had to be active (so with a DAC inside), same reason why no more video output other than the also active HDMI connectors (that didn't even output proper 1080p or heck even 1080i, hope they fixed this at least);

2: Frankly the iPhone having an IR receiver is news to me, but if it happens to get back the IR it would be on the bottom so...

Generally when you charge a phone it sits flat and there is no stress to the port or the cable.
now..is the lightning port ready to handle the level of stress it will get form handling a headset? Will it pop out, will it bent...

            Welcome back to 2006.

Ill embrace this new idea only as long as :

              1. The new lightening port is able to do analog out as well so that the external DAC is not a requirement all the time.

              2. The freed up space from TRS is used for IR sensor which I truly miss on an iPhone!

              Rest all Im fine.

Now you need to keep the external DAC water resistant as well, wet plastic cone speakers (most earphones/headphones) just dry and ready to go, but wet external DAC is kaput, goodbye from this world.
The 3.5mm jack is pretty easy to make waterproof, in fact Sony has been doing this since quite some years already, without the flap to protect it I may add.

you would end up buying multiple adapters or multiple earphones.

Basically , this step brings back in 2000's where every company had different port and needed different earphones.

this will make it a lot easier for OEMs to make their devices water resistant I suppose, and also thinner (as if we needed paper thin phones). other than this, it bring only disadvantages - most important being that you can't use the port while listening to music so no charging the battery (in the past the "wall huggers" would listen to music while charging their phones :P ). also negates the better quality of the wired earbuds (over wireless) to an extent - unless you buy really expensive ones

AnonD-553989, 01 Jul 2016Then, never buy apple's products.Problem is not only about Apple(are people actually fallow news here?)
All companies fallow that trend, and sadly most of users will buy those devices and headphones.
This is not evolution of headphones but trend, and trends are not always good, but looking at today user base of Apple and other companies(because sheeps are on every side) this not gonna end soon, because those people buy it just for brand/old habit and those people move sales numbers, and for companies this is all what matter.

                        Simply: just don't buy.

                        Vote with your money.

Like buyers forced Samsung to bring back SD in S7.
Many would argue that, in the era of Cloud, SD isn't necessary. Yet, we want them.

                        So, just don't buy.

So here we have, start of new, totally useless market to suck more money from users... with all new licensing, patents and hardware that make even more money...

As everyone know its like moving small part from phone to headphones that still need to convert it to analog signal...

Now we not only gonna be worried about quality of headphones, but also electronic that is there. Difference is that instead of buying GOOD headphones for 50-100Euro that will last few years, we gonna need to spend more and more and worry if it gonna work after 3years...
