Anonymous, 12 Jul 2016Reading from ram costs less than reading from storage, basi... moreIt's clear you don't have any understanding of DRAM workings. every cell needs to be refreshed ~64ms, whether it is used or not. That costs power, write and reading from DRAM also costs power and on top of that the I/O drivers need power. To know why in more detail you need to have some digital electronics background, not about to describe an entire univerrsity subject in one post.

The more DRAM there is to address the more power it takes for the memory subsystem. Exactly why the Oneplus 3 has a neutered pointless 6GB RAM on in there. they did it for marketing but castrated it to preserve battery life anyway. On a laptop/desktop you can get away with 5W even 10W increase, on a smartphone SoC even 0.5W more is very costly and somewhere like 1W more leads to sure shot throttling in such TDP constrained form factors.

The problem with having too many apps in memory are wake locker and more chances of memory leaks which lead to battery leak. Those are all sovlable by having a demon throwing out of memory those apps actually abusing it.

Ram management is indeed a problem, but having less ram does not actually help. It's like saying bigger cars use more petrol therefore they are not good for fuel efficiency. And the answer is not necessarily, as they also cover distances faster thus in average, per distance, may actually use less oil...

It costs power not only to refresh every cell in the DRAM chips it also costs even more power to read or write into DRAM. People have no clue about the effects on power consumption from the memory subsystems. This is not a PC where extra power consumption of 2-5W more isn't even perceived. An extra 1W is disaster for TDP restricted form factors like mobile SoCs.

Some of those people demanding 4GB ram are really slow. They really don't get how Ram works on android. They don't get for example that ram is more important that SoC for smoothness. More ram means more apps cached in memory thus less loading time. Guess what you do on a phone, load one app after another, it's silly and uncalled to not see that. It's basically the most important spec about every day smoothNess of a phone...

Stick to 4GB RAM max, put in that 4000mAh battery increase the thickness and make those whyning mawrans out there run away while real serious buyers with common sense get to buy a well rounded device.

But this is Samsung we are talking about here, too focused on imitating Apple, so reasonable expectations have to dropped to satisfy spec nerds with weakly endowed mental faculties.
