Sadly not a good replacement for the thousands of builders and other tradesmen who use this phone. They won't want to mess about with Symbian software. Why not just make a 5410i with bluetooth? Anyone else remember the 6250? In its day that was untouchable; they should've stuck bluetooth, 1MP and 256k TFT in that!

Wow! Bravo...When it comes to imaging, they said that SE got their
Cybershot phone(K800)..And SE also got their Walkman phone(W900)
for music. For me these phones got equal quality with Nokia's.
Its just the brand power that makes it like its BIG.
Nokia should think out of the box.5500 is one phone that stands
out of the crowd. Bravo Nokia!

I had a Nokia 5140 and found it not able to take much as far as roughness goes. And cases were around $50 each. I hope this one can take more of a beating as the 5140 couldnt last.

Be real people, looks aren't everything. Nokia didnt exactly have fashion victims in mind when they created this phone. They did their market research well and realised that people liked the old 5140. It was designed to take heavy abuse and the rubberised cover on it made it instantly recognisable and people still ask me if 02 still stock it (i work for the O2 online sales team). The only downfall of the original was a bad camera, lack of bluetooth etc. What nokia have done here is to take the pros of the 5140 and ally them with all the mod cons ie. 2mp camera, BT, IR, USB, Radio, etc etc. This phone is perfect for people who use their phone on the go, people who have very active lifestyle, people who may well take their phone out with them when training. The fact that you can use certain aspects of this phone as part of your training regime means that its going to be an instant hit with that sector of the market.
Nokia already have enough fashion phones to be doing with so they are aiming to provide a phone for people who aren't so superficial that they would take anything as long as it looks good. (ie. all those people that STILL want a nokia 8800! - get the idea people, its more use as a paperweight!)
I only hope that O2 see sense and get this phone in as soon as it hits the market so they can reap the benefits.

Look at the # and * keys. nokia finally understood that those silent and lock keys functions can be shortcutted on the keyboard.
and yes, it's an ugly phone, but dont be surprised if it will sell like crazy. people tend to go the weird way these days

When are you people going to stop looking at the design and see the functionality of this phone!!! Find me a phone that has the water, dust and shock resistance features together with symbian, music playback, BT, IR etc and looks really good as well and I will be the first one to throw a stone at this phone. It's a rugged phone, not some nice cute phone for u to show off. I've been waiting ages for something like this to show up and it is finally here. I'll take a phone that can withstand the hard knocks of life anyday over a phone that looks good but crumbles at the slightest rough use. And please stop comparing with SE, until SE comes with something similar then we talk. The closest we have is siemens and it dun come close to this baby. I say job well done Nokia, I'll continue to support your sports range phones...

I don't understand comments like: "nokia only makes bricks and bricks and more bricks"
But when I look at Nokia models there are so many sizes and shapes that everybody can find what is looking for. This model is from 5XXX series and is sopposed to look like that. Want small and good looking get 8800 e.t.c. Same is with Samsung or Motorola.
But unfortunately if you saw one SE you saw them all. Yuo like oone you like all, cause most of their phones looks completely the same :D

Like real life...this phone is smart in features and ugly to look at. It sounds rude but when will anyone understand that utility and looks CAN go hand in hand. And the screen is way too small.

Ugly phone, really ugly. After the release of Samsung SGH-X820 view this ugly and suposed heavier and bulky phone is a shame for nokia, they would change their design department, nokia only makes bricks and bricks and more bricks
