18 July, 2016
Yes, we used the won number amount for the dramatic ringing, but $879 million is still a lot.

Well this will fill the coffers of the phone companies (that sell the most premium chipsets) brilliantly, and if paid compensation, will allow them to post some phenomenal 'profits'.

My issue with this is for the people who have purchased devices with WAY overinflated prices due to this 'illegal' royalty markup.

Whilst it would prove difficult to refund the individual customers a cash sum, specific phone models should be given a token piece of software or some 'credits' for the various online stores.

Otherwise this means that the phone companies will have profited illegally through this. We all know that retail markup is generally a percentage (quite significant) of the 'cost' price.

For every extra dollar of cost price we consumers pay several; so whilst the chipmaker made a token extra amount, that amount was then multiplied times three for the profit made off the consumer.

So do we now ask for this difference back?
To implement this repayment, to millions of customers, would cost extra again.
          This is a BIG thing.

And like frontier law, penalties should be made harsher as a deterrent.
These practices should be made risky and scary to the big companies... they generally bank on getting away with stuff, and then 'maybe' having to pay back if they truly get caught out.. and as this article highlights; different world regions need to recover damages individually, legal systems everywhere being 'propped up' by the legalities.

Rant aside, Qualcomm chips have poor quality audio DAC built in, with less than a handful of phones that have added outboard DAC to the Qualcomm base SoC. (Sony Z series as an example(not sure if all models)).
I have always liked the idea of the Exynos chipsets in Sammy phones, as they write their front end and software, hopefully, to maximise this chipset.

Synthetic benchs put the Qualcomm equivalent generation chipset as marginally faster, and this is often enough to sway consumer purchasing decisions,.. but I would prefer the Exynos and improved DACs every time...

Romie Lee, 19 Jul 2016Well I think, Samsung and LG should make their own chipset ... moreHave you even heard about Exynos? Anyway, samsung was able to sustain its exynos chipset supply which it used solely for the S6 and Note flagships of last year and it would have been best if they just dropped qualcomm entirely this year as well.

If proved true, it would mean that Qualcomm might have made expensive devices more expensive... thus cheating the customer.

And now if they are fined, they will recover this money from the customer, because the customer will ultimately purchase the Snapdragon chipsets.
                                      Who loses again? The customer.

I hope the allegations are baseless.
