Xbox One S teardown yields 8 out of 10 repairability score

03 August, 2016
The new Xbox One S went on sale yesterday, as expected, and today the teardown experts at iFixit have done what they do best - take the thing apart. The Xbox One S comes with an improved GPU which supports HDR10, 2TB of storage (500GB and 1TB options will launch soon), HDMI 2.0a connectivity with support for 4K video at 60Hz, a redesigned Wireless Controller, a vertical stand, and mechanical buttons. It's identified as Model 1681.

oh god why, 04 Aug 20165,400 RPM hard drive!! what year is it !?Platter densities have gone up,.. on a 250gb platter, data loads slower than on a 333gb platter. Tech changes, not all things are equal.
Hence why I take rant about 'spec sheet' numbers.
We need to understand what is really going on.

I know one year I had a $4000 tax return I planned to blow on an amp, at the time would have got me the top of the line (of the brand I wanted).
The shop had last years model of a mid level one going out the door for really cheap, the replacement to it was worse in just about every way,.. but the 'spec sheet' was written in such a way as to sound better/more capable.

I figured I could go without high quality DACs for all channels (L/R being for 'serious music' anyway, surround at the time being vastly inferior for audio),.. and I opted for the bigger saving, older unit, that way out performed the replacement.
Consumers not understanding how to read distortion measurements would have thought the newer 'higher output power' amp was a big upgrade,.. but for 'spec sheet buyers' they would have in fact bought a much weaker amp (and paid more for it).

A little education can really hurt us, as manufacturers know what we are 'looking for'.
6bit colour IPS panels (monitors) as an example. (everyone wanted IPS, so they made cheap ones, as consumers never looked at the colour depth,.. 16.2 million and 16.7 million colours sound similar,.. but '262000 colours guessing their way towards 16.2 million is not 16700000 colours!)

Anonymous, 04 Aug 2016Even if you had SSD, it already was proven that you only ge... moreIncorrect.

On ps3, the sata interface greatly limited the throughput from truly benefitting..

Many games mostly using lots of small files (PS3, grand turismo made a huge difference) and using dynamic texture load in (rage, gta5 etc) showed consistant benefits.
On ps4, the ssd doesn't show such huge gains (over clever mechanical/platter drives), nor hybrids (hdd with ssd 'buffer') due to clever system design and game programing.

Sony actually use a cache area on the outside of the drive platter where the access time and drive rotation is optimal for loading.
It is a clever design, which does catch out some replacement drives that use odd sized platters, as the system then puts the cache zone not on the edge of the drive platter.
Why hybrid drives do not show the gains they should.

I opted for a hitachi 1tb 7200rpm (basically just a faster variant of the default sony drive) Some games are significanly faster to load, texture transistions smoother/less noticable, and the dashboard and system startup better.
Not ssd better, but fair gain with minimal outlay.
I thought hybrids would be the way to go, but older seagate momentums xt's were the only ones (I think) with the right platter sizes. The mismatched platter in present generation hybrids nullifys half the gain. Being infrequent gamer, and mostly playing the same ones at any given period, the hybrids would reload the same data frequently and hit their true stride for me,.. but as for bang for buck for the average gamer 7200rpm is a cheap and great upgrade. Heat and power draw isn't an issue, but a few ps4s have had issue with 2tb units and low power state whilst in sleep mode.
An uncharted 4 limited edition console is driving me nuts with a 2tb drive presently due to this issue.

Some of my PS3s utilise solid state drives, but due to game installs on ps4 being so huge 7200rpm is fine. Platter densities have gone up, newer drives are generally quite fast at loading large amounts of data. 7200rpm makes access time less, so games with lots of little files to load can gain.

If you buy the right drive in a small enclosure, you can put the 500gb internal into the 'caddy' and use the old drive for media...

I guess xboxs don't make drive swap easy so this is probably the wrong thread for this... but, hey, fyi

oh god why, 04 Aug 20165,400 RPM hard drive!! what year is it !?5400 rpm needs less power, is more quiete and lasts longer than a 7200 rpm one. Though loading speeds would be improved by an ssd option but whatever...

Nice. Consoles are gonna get improved much more often in today's fast paced development of technology and games.

And PS4s have generally 40% more system grunt (yes, real world, running generally 20% more pixels per frame, with 20% higher frame rate)

                  I actually don't care.
I believe platform loyalists with friends to play with online, in their chosen ecosystem is the best buy for the 'USER'.
Pacman and space invaders are fun (graphics do not necessarily maketh the game),..

PS4 peeps have fair arguments, both platforms have exclusives, yada yada yada

Sure microsft are kicking themselves for skimping so much on the gpu resources on the first 'One', but did as much they could to bring to parity the situation....

Removed kinect (gained ~10% cpu back), gave win 10 for free (more developers for dirext x12; might get better optimisations for xbox...)

Just knowing how these threads turn to mud the internet wide....
                  Popcorn at the ready!
