Just a day after there were rumors that Sony will make official an upgraded PS4 next month, the Japanese company has started sending invites for a PlayStation event scheduled for September 7.

The invite is an obvious hint at HDR. So.. probably 4K also. Hope that means 4K games and heavily updated hardware, not just hdmi 2.0 and displayport for 4K movies, but games at 1080P..

..., 10 Aug 20164k is entire point of their upgrade so dont lieAs the other guy said it will only be video playback. 4K gaming is a pipe dream on consoles at the moment especially with the fact they use APUs but even if they do manage to pull it off don't expect amazing framerates on said 4K games. The 'Project Scorpio' Xbox *may* just pull it off but it is something like just under 50% more powerful when looking into TFLOPS. Unless Sony have managed to pull a last minute rabbit out of the hat to beat their rumoured 4.14TFLOPS I doubt we will see anything other than VR based kind of stuff (as I've said in the past that's probably what the Neo is for). Even Xbox's 6TFLOPS is still going to struggle with smooth 4K without heavy optimisation.

          Well that's not true

Digital Foundry conducted some hypothetical tests with a pc built around the rumored specs of the PS4 Neo. It can generally play games well at 1440p, sometimes with extra performance when compared to standard's sub-1080p gameplay, most likely due to the increased GPU power. However said GPU power isn't enough for 4K gaming, yielding gameplay below the minimum 30 FPS, sometimes even barely reaching 20. This Neo variant will probably be relegated to 4K Blu-Ray player & at best upscale games to 4K. Unless the rumored specs turn out to be bogus.

Enjoy your last-gen PS4 while you can. I know I'll try to make the most of it.
