Apple did this because Bluetooth headphone battery life is crappy.
That wasn't enough for Apple they want longer battery life for headphones. Lets see how long you can use them before battery runs out.

You can always trust Apple to come up with new ways to squeeze even more money from their ever so loyal fans. After today's announcement you can expect to hear defense of whatever proprietary crap Apple comes up.... In this case Bluetooth.
Myself, I'm planning to buy LG V20 with its removable battery, memory card slot and latest Android 7.0 ;-)

It will probably just be a different blue tooth protocol like Sony's LDAC for hi-res music since normal bluetooth can't handle Hi res music properly. But I'm only speculating.

Apple Earpod with remote & mic is $29. If you add bluetooth! Thats $129 for sure. And on a single charge, it will last about 24 hours (if you don't use them), if you use them they will still last 4 hours!! Lets see. Prepared to be amazed by the fools.
