It's normal. Apple will be a big seller in the US simply because it's the company with HQ in States (and they have much more approachable prices there). Also a heavy product placement in most of the Hollywood productions bumps up the sales. On top of it all a lot of Americans (not all, but most), think that because something is made in USA it's the best in the world. Period. So they will go for it, no matter whether it's reasonable or not. Don't get me wrong, Apple makes decent devices, but for this price, every new phone is a highway robbery. If Android would be as simple OS as iOS, you could run it smoothly on every mid-ranger that costs around 300-400 dollars.

It doesn't make sense to look at them in different categories.

Hint US, it outsold iPhone 6s for one or two month in US with very small margin and not worldwide. Also two month is different than quarter... after that iphone 6s went back to top selling phone.
