Weekly poll: Apple iPhone 7 and 7 Plus - are they what you were hoping for?

11 September 2016
The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus caused a lot of excitement and sparked numerous discussions this week. Traditionally, Apple's smartphone is a controversial topic, as some people are more than happy with the iPhone's new features, while others are not that impressed.

Ok so before I say anything I use an LG G5, but do not put me in 'fanboy' territory, I like it, it does what I need, I use macs elsewhere in my life, as an audio engineer and musician.

Regarding the last of the jack, I appreciate the sentiment of trying to start a trend.. but the thing is they are not. Bluetooth headphones have been around for a while. In my honest opinion, quality is lost over wireless audio, only a bit, and most audio is too compressed most people don't hear it.

The thing is though, all apple have done is try to remove the CHOICE. If i want bluetooth headphone, I have them, if I want jacked audio, I have that..... it is the choice I want, not to be shoehorned into buying that they tell me I need.

GSM Arena is infested by android fanboys who are so angry at Apple always; the angrier they are the more traffic GSM Area gets and the more adverts they have and the more money they get. Just like Apple, the more people idolize it the more money it gets. Idolizing is both negative and positive in form. You love it so much blindly or you passionately hate it but both actions lead to Apple being more popular!

Now to iPhone 7 duo. This phone satisfies the higher needs of Apple followers. These needs will never be understood by the exploding prone Samsung fans, the same way Apple followers don't understand Android/Samsung followers. One thing to note in this war though is consolidation vs fragmentation. Because of the specs race in the Android camp diminishing returns quickly set in and OEMs tend to drop and cherry pick specs because in short you cant have all the specs in one phone all at once. You can't have many cores, high res screen, high RAM and high battery life simultaneously. You can't all of all worlds. That is why there is tremendous variations in the Android camp yet the performance - what is really important - is always compromised. Now Apple knows how to consolidate specs. As it increases the specs it maintains the useful old specs - it doesn't do try and error Samsung type where one flagship is released with a MicroSD, and on the next generation it gets removed, one version is water proof, the next isn't, one has heavy touchwiz, the other is lighter, one has IR blaster, the upgrade doesn't. Batteries, RAM, sensors (who remembers S4 sensors - why were they dropped). When you get used to a phone's features, the least you expect is an upgrade, not an abandonment especially if its going to resurface on a later model.

That's why people are unhappy about the head phone jack being removed from iPhone! But myself I can live with that.

I agree on going wireless and removing the 3.5mm jack. There are many beneficial reasons and a promising future for the push of wireless audio technology, however, some things could be improved on by Apple:

              1. Apple should've worked on improving iTunes to make the ease of transferring audio and data files even easier than before, whilst introducing users the benefits of lossless audio and a new ALAC codec with support of 24bit/96-192KHz audio songs, SOLD on their store as a new standard and not just crappy AAC which is a lossy source.

              2. Included better bluetooth audio transfer protocols like aptX LL (or equivalent) so you can actually use and listen to CD quality 16bit/44.1-48khz files. They exist in Android phones/tablets already, plus, more quality bluetooth headphones with aptX built-in are being produced and sold by quality brands like Sennheiser, Audio Technica, V-moda etc... which Apple sorely should've included.

              3. Any true audiophile or someone who is an enthusiast on audio, would've already bought a dedicated audiophile DAP or used the amazing DAC+AMP+power bank combos like the Oppo HA-2 or Fiio Kun Lun (google it and thank me later) and bypassed the 3.5mm jack on their phones (Android included) already via Lightning or USB. The removal of the 3.5 mm jack will actually encourage more companies to produce better, external dac+amp devices such as above with a wider range and perhaps, more affordable prices.

              4. Most phone's (even the awesome ZTE Axon 7, HTC 10 or even Marshall phones with their great built-in audiophile grade hardware) internal audio parts today are still, unfortunately, limited by the space in the phone's chassis, not to mention the complications of having them shielded from interference from the other electronics within.

Change is rough, but its really for the better.

mir, 12 Sep 2016You seriously haven't tried any decent wireless headphones then. You haven't listened audio above 128kbps , then.

Anonymous, 12 Sep 2016Why dont android just adopt the lightning charger?Apple proprietary.

BTW, Apple wanted USB type c to happen. USB Type-C, initially grew out of talks between AMD, HP, Intel, and Microsoft while developing USB 3.1 and eventually involved dozens of other companies, but Apple and Google are among the first to implement it in laptops. In fact, Apple contributed 18 of 79 engineers for the development of USB Type C.

So, USB Type-C will be used by other including Apple. But USB Type-C headphone might get compatible with other gadgets like laptop and PC but lightning port headphone won't be even compatible with iMac or Macbooks unless they implement the lighting port in the future hardware upgrades.

                    Duh!

It's a complete disappointment. What extra is there besides of the IP rating? Nothing. Minor improvements and asking a top of the bill price for it. Why would I upgrade from my iPhone 6? Which is an already two year old phone by now? Absolutely no reason whatsoever. The only, and really only reason why to purchase this device is if you have the option to get it by extension of your ending two-year contract with your carrier.

This phone brand only has its faults revealed when its next generation emerges, and its new features, admits the old ones..are old, but previously, those same features were never allowed to be shown up, against Android phones who had already moved on.
Truth the camera is better the plus has, what amounts to optical zoom, shrouded in a dual camera haze-up mystery. The phones bezells are massive, its screen inferior on any level, the white front can be considered along with the s3/ note 1 era, the camera module on the back is an eyesore to that design of phone( to be fair the black one nullifies this a bit.),they got rid of the ear jack, to put the farcical button mechanism where it should have been, and the form factor amounts to this, if there were no phones on the planet, no media, an today,
2 new things called phines appeared in the world, A galaxy edge phone and an iphone, scarcely one unbiased person would pick up the Galaxy with its peerless seemingly, edge to edge Superamoled, 2k screen, in that body form, and even go on to examine an iphone, with its many notable lesser or insignificant features. That doesn't mean that any brand of new generation phone isn't a good phone, but to pretend an iphone is the best, is not an opinion that can be substantiated anymore, that opinion, as any, is valid, but a mere personal, perhaps, paid media backed, opinion it is, nothing more.
