Qualcomm files patent infringement complaints against Meizu in the US, Germany, and France

17 October 2016
After initiating multiple license terms and patent infringement-related actions against Meizu in China back in June this year, Qualcomm announced this past weekend that it has now filed patent infringement complaints against the Chinese company in the United States, Germany, and France as well.

AnonD-566154, 18 Oct 2016That's complete crap. The infringement is related to the us... moreIt is the use of modems, whether integrated with the CPU or not. Of which, those modems use the 3G and 4G tech without license.

Once a patent is declared "essential" to an induatry standard it must be licensed under FRAND terms (fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory).

Oppo, Samsung, Apple, et al. are paying for it (and by proxy, us the customers too). MediaTek & Miezu are not.

Patent law requires you to defend it or lose the IP to the public domain. Qualcomm isn't a charity, but it isn't evil. It is one of the major holders of the 8000+ patents involved, but most of those companies are getting a cut or waiving their rights.

But hey, if you want it to be a David vs. Goliath narrative, have at it. I don't have a stake in it, but neither corporation is in for anything but profit and no one is being strong-armed.

Qualcomm's been suing everyone and everything in it's path for using Mediatek to further their own stranglehold. They haven't been successful either.

mir, 17 Oct 2016More like extortion in disguise. It's not very extortionate when everyone else is paying for the industry standard patents. Why should Meizu get a free ride off of someone else's engineering?

That's not the only thing they should get complaints/sued for, they fully deserve it.

I wonder who they wanna sue in Germany. Meizu doesn't have any presence here. All they do is selling their devices through Amazon's fulfillment services within a legal gray area.

I suspect this is leverage for the negotiations.

Meizu likely operates on razor thin margins for their phones. Qualcomm probably wants back-payments for devices already produced and Meizu balked.

Maybe they can't enforce it China, but the prospect of WTO countries banning the offending devices will probably bring them around to a settlement.
