"32GB Google Pixel XL costs around $285 to make"
When how many are produced? If you simply try to make one of these devices, the material costs and CNC equipment would be astronomical.
Without a reference figure, the price seems meaningless.

>" software, R&D and marketing costs are never included in BoM calculations."
I'm sorry, what? R&D of what, excactly? All their specs are off the shelf: processor from SD, display, memory and storage from Samsung, camera from Sony, etc. The only "R&D" is the design itself, which everybody sees they haven't excactly spent much time on.

there is no R&D in this phone, as it's just a copy of existing HTC devices, so google could have gotten away with $450-500.

Anonymous, 25 Oct 2016I know that those costs are not included but my point was :... morethere was an article showing the net profit from samsung apple and sony flagships, if i remember correctly, iphone had the most net profit, then samsung and sony was in negative (was some months ago) my point is even with R&D and all, all these manufacturers could (mark the word could) sell all this phones a lot cheaper and still make some profit, having said that, they can charge as much as they want as long as ppl are buying (they also do research in how is the top price they can sell to get more revenue)
now to the post, this kinda info is really good just as information, we can't ask the companies to sell the phones for less just because we know the phone costs a lot less to make
i still thx for the post since there were a lot of the actual costs i didn't know ;)

there has not been any RnD done..they just slapped in everything they could find..like your previous article said..they couldnt complete waterproofing it because of time constraints..that should shave off a couple of bucks right??...the main cost is mostly because of purchased parts, and also google's obnoxious thinking that people will blindly buy these phones...they do too..

Herodroid, 25 Oct 2016Wow, 4usd for battery, 10usd for everything in the box, can... moreYou have to consider, that those are mass production prices. If you'd be the company buying those in millions, then it does entitle you to discounts when agreed. I'm sure you can get most of those for a bit more anyway (eBay has plenty of Chinese electronics).

Herodroid, 25 Oct 2016waterproof is just a small part. It's just the price of the materials. Like you already pointed out there are workers who were paid to make it and also people who supervise them. On top of that there's the factory, electricity, machines, grease for the machines, transport, advertising, and a lot of other things that go into the cost of a product being manufactured.
