It's anybody's guess what will happen with the courts about the employees who died from cancer at their factories because of inadequate safety gear. Or the next price rigging scandal to hit. It seems like they have a be every year. I wonder what they are price rigging now.

impossible for profits down, so far as i know samsung is big company, mobile division just part of it,every month have new release either its same spec in difference design with good good price. Somehow samsung got patent, insurans, software,can say a city. dont worry do new design , throw the old legacy design, people might forget it. but with google pixel around i might switch to pixel if samsung continued with odd design( like a hospital gadget or 1990 gadget for daily use, now it might look good but in 2020, omg dunno what to say) i always support samsung but nothing last forever

Mkdc, 27 Oct 2016It's simple.. people have invested in the samsung galaxy br... moreoh i was as anti samsung as you...but 2016 came i wanted an android flagship(cos you know...broken phone..hehe) at the time i was buying(i used a zenfone 2 btw) the phones out were..lg g4, xperia x/z5, iphone 6 series, and the s7 series..i went with the edge because of the larger display..having been accustomed to a zenfone 2 and a zenfone 6 before..i was skeptical at first, but i have become a samsung fan officially...not a fanboy, i'll still criticize them over touchwiz and ram management..but the phone is awesome, having a dual edge is a ballsy move..it makes for a difficult grip but an infinity illusion on the display

Please point to the precise sentence where I did. They openly admitted that they swapped out with different batteries and the problem remained. Hence why they cancelled it, as at that point they did not know what it was and realised there was no quick fix any more. The credibility was gone and nothing was going to get it back either. So while that tells us it was most probably not the battery, it does not tell us the root cause either. And please explain how the battery being removable would have changed the fact they blow up and most proably not the result of them being faulty either? The second recall proved that much in all probabilty but it does not tell us the root cause and there is a good chance we will never know either.

ChiL, 27 Oct 2016Its really quite sad to hear that SAMSUNG has this bad run ... morePart of problem is Samsung's own doing. It used to make phones with removable batteries up to Note 4. Then it went to unibody design with sealed in batteries, asking for trouble if there was thermal issues (as happened in Note 7). Too bad Samsung executives didn't have foresight to preserve removable batteries for it's flagship Note 7. If it did, then all they had to do was ship new batteries to customers instead of recall and all the tremendous hassle of having it's phones being banned on airlines!!

It will only be deducted when it actually occur. What they have done here is to create a deferred tax asset, which they could potentially claim in the future, if the expense does occur. Hence, say without this provision, had they earned $8 billion in profit, they are still liable to profit on the $8 billion with no deduction on the provision.

AnonD-434953, 27 Oct 2016amazing...for a company so big...only one phone's problem b... moreIts accounting profit, they provide for the future expenses to be incurred which (not limiting to) are shipment cost, legal cost, compensation cost, compensation to suppliers etc. They already mentioned it will cost $5 billion in quarters to come. As accounting standards have criteria to how much they can provide, they have only provided those that are in material aspect, likely to happen. These are effectively one off expense, it certainly wouldnt bankrupt Samsung, the fact that its whole electronics company still earning $5billion for the quarter net of the provision. The same would have been for Apple if they were to provide $5 billion for such one off expense and the worse would happen to the likes of Sony and HTC, which could techinically bankrupt them.
Hope you understand how numbers are crunched and accounted

Just like how anti-samsung i am, i will never buy/own a samsung smartphone until no other android oems exist, unless for some reasons, i get one for free, i might use it or sell it..
