But i am really afraid soon i will be left as tool apps and new apps begin to require lollipop or higher.
I also really want material design ( i'm in love with it lol) because after a long time using holo i am getting bored of the dark interface while everybody is on the new fancy material design.
I am not saying kitkat is not great, it is functional and light and snappy, and you can get most new features of newer version of android from apps and some fiddling in the settings.
But damn i really love material design.

Pretty much anything on 4.0 or later is fine. The only real concern is security after that.

Anonymous, 08 Nov 2016So Mr Expert, can you make an app that TARGET every version... moreLike I said, you had no idea about what you are saying.
currently, most apps starts with kitkat while others requires atleast lolipop.
why would anyone writes anything for froyo, gingerbread or jellybean? is your world running backwards?
Lots of apps no longer support below kitkat, this already slap in your face.
when dev tell you backward compatibility, it doesnt mean it will make a app way back to 1990s.there is a limit on that.

NOPE. If you need GCM .. and user refuse to update their Google Services? - Screwed
If you need FB integration.. their package required API 15 and above?? - Screwed
If you need third party software.? Pairing BLE devices using their package? -Screwed.

Either you man up and write separate ground up methods for those non compatible users.. then you get bugs and complains.

So at most you are targeting 80% of the popular release.. but customer and users are not as forgiving.. they will say your app is JUNK .. and uninstall.

How are you a developer? DID you just go download Android Studio and write "Hello world"?.. Yeah.. that run PERFECTLY fine in a simulator.

Some phone stuck with older version of android because manufacturers know the newer version will turn your phone to crap and hang like crazy anyway if you insist on updating it to lge latest and greatest. So, it is better with old version like kitkat and marshmallow.

It isn't MN, its MM. As in MarshMallow not MarshNallow.
It has always been the same with emulators. Do you expect developers to install every version or buy different phones? Lol

But the person you quoted is right. Developers shouldn't have to worry about these stupid details. That time should be invested in app development.

Everyone taking software versions so personally here are children.

I can't imagine the death squelch of a Froyo handset in 2016 but if it keeps the grumpy, out of touch quiet and off the Internet more power to them.

Currently using 5.1 Lollipop, not trying to download obscure Dutch zoo porn like the rest of you nerds do to break your phones.

the lastest version had backward compatibility so the dev use lower api like kitkat then it will work too on Lolipop and MN. and oh, the SDK had emulators to easy to test out. not even need the real phone ha!

The Android community have to write so many app support compatibly software to resolve this, which could be used to innovate. They should have pull the plug on non updated phones!
