Larry Page to become Google chief
HTC, the Taiwanese smartphone maker that has emerged as a major rival to Apple's iPhone, saw net profits rise 160% during the October to December quarter compared with a year earlier.

HTC was the first smartphone maker to use Google's Android operating system.

Net profits rose to New Taiwan dollars 14.59bn ($500m; £315m) on the back of NT$104bn sales.

The company sold 24.6 million phones last year, more than double the 2009 figure.

Growth is expected to remain rapid this year, with the company predicting some 8.5 million handsets to be sold during the January to March quarter this year.

The company will also start making tablet computers to challenge Apple's iPad.

"It's a new market with many competitors, and we don't want to rush into it," Peter Chou, HTC chief executive, said.

"We hope the product we eventually unveil will be one that meets consumers' needs."

I'm interested in finding out the specs of these new models. Hopefully something that trumps or rivals the Atrix. If it weren't for the god-awful MotoBlur, I'd be pre-ordering one right now... HTC Sense on my Desire is better in every single way :)

Vlad UK, 21 Jan 2011Is it me or HTC is becoming boring with new models?Nope! All their designs seem the same... Sad thing is that there's not much you can do in terms of design, when most of the front panel is covered by a large screen! But they should at least try a bit harder...

Well, if you put a 4.3in screen AND still want that your phone hold in a pocket instead of a bag, you're left with little choice of design. Well you still have the back panel or the profile (Nexus S and Xperia Arc) to exercise you design talent but I don't really see the point in that. And I don't change my HD2 screen for anything smaller. Last thing - remember design is mainly important if your phone is OFF. Otherwise it's design plus UI.

This is getting boring... all manufacturers are coming up with the same cr@p! Nothing new! Trust me, specs on all HTC devices are going to be similar to those of Samsung or LG! Specially those high-end phones (dual core processors clocking at 1.2Ghz, 5 or 8mp cam with HD recording, 3.7", 4" or 4.3" capacitive touchscreens of some amoled or LCD type, etc.) and let's not talk about designs! It's a pity innovation is getting lost...
