Ipads had a breakout first few years. They still sell absurdly well, far better than most laptops and all tablets combined. They lose sales because Apple under Cook rehash the same design. If a new and exciting tablet gets out people will flock to it.

For example 2in1s that are hardly a new or very interesting concept still have Microsoft a a steady source of income. The demand is there you just need to be creative in trying to tap it, unlike phones and laptops where even half-hearted attempts sell, tablets need something more, something that will make old tablet owners to want to update.

Samsung had it by offering pen before anybody else, multiwindow, excellent screen. All she had to do was to better the software(as she did with phones) equip it with great hardware, not mid range one and support it. Instead she dropped support, saw sales go went the way of the dodo and then stopping seriously trying altogether.

Just because a crowd is more challenging doesn't mean that they won't part with their money if you do it right. There is hardly a better device for students and academics to this day (best device for media and reading and keeping notes, in the lightest package possible all the while keeping a large screen).

There is a reason why tablets sell still so well despite basically being the same thing for the last 3 years. Imagine what would happen if someone was to innovate.

Existing user doesn't particularly want to upgrade their ipads and the rest prefer to buy cheaper android tabs.

AnonD-624256, 07 Jan 2017That's because of its tablet optimized app selection, sales... moreActually Samsung Note was way more optimized for the size than anything Apple had at the time.
Multi-Windows (which is hella useful), pen with character recognition, even many/most apps from Apple like news readers, ebook readers were there.

Social media apps thought never got optimized (because they're sh*t) but most importantly Samsung gave up on it. It never got the goodies from Note 4, of course stuck at Lollipop (No Marshmallow and Nougat).

The great difference between iPads and Android tabs is that they get better with time. Great android tabs (like Note 10.1) get abandoned and of course people don't want to touch that. It's like creating self-fulfilling prophecies. Create a bad product and then use that as a reason to create more bad products.

There is plenty of space to succeed on tablets, it's not a small market, almost as big as laptops in sales. Yet Android OEMs have gave that space to Apple (very restrictive) and Microsoft (basically laptops with touch support). Androids could well position themselves in-between. More feature-rich and open than Apple, yet not as serious and laptop-like as Microsoft.

That way you could have something that is neither a phone or a laptop, yet very capable at things that neither are too capable (reading with pen support on a big screen that is light and lasts more than 10 hours, light laptoping on a much smaller device than an ultrabook, etc)...
