This holiday season was not that happy for Nokia, nor was the year

27 January, 2011
Nokia has had a tough 2010, which proved worse than even the recession-bound 2009. The phones volumes and their prices have fallen but Nokia estimates it has taken the lead in the QWERTY...

I belive nokia is done, they have the same interface on the cheapest phone (ex.2330) and most expensive (ex:n8, and n8 with maemo) they all have the same interface..cheap and old..nokia has not brought something new for a long time now, they are not running android, witch is shamefull, and lg for example is doing their best, and it's seeing, they have a lot of new thing comming up, and i'm not a lg fan, but you have to admit it;s true..nokia is going down, and for good reason..

Things will certainly change this year for both Nokia and LG. Nokia failed with N96 and N97, but the N8 is starting to change things, I'm sure that Nokia will be on the top again when the MeeGo devices start shipping. And LG got some promising phones this year too.
Meanwhile, I'm sure that Apple iPhone will start to fall this year with Android taking the market, Android and iOS got the same kind of public, but Android is growing up really fast while iOS still with stupid limitations.

      So consider this:
Only Nokia 6650 fold(I bet is less than 1% of the sales) is a Nokia smartphone with a price under 100 Euro(see phone finder, using "Nokia", "All Smartphones", Price to "100 Eur").

So the average smartphone price was 156 Euro. How many smartphones with the price between 100-150 euro have been sold and how many N8 (price more than 400 Euro) to get to that average? N8, for sure could not sale more than 10% from the number of the smartphones, so it sold less than 2.8 million from the total of 28 million smartphones.

Simon, 27 Jan 2011I expected MUCH worse results. Apparently people still buy ... moreI will tell you the reasons:
First: Nokia smartphones are very functional, almost every high-end smartphone lacks something (video-call, FM radio, Adobe Flash support and even multi-tasking), while Nokia smartphone have everything and N8 even got a FM Transmiter, HDMI port, a TRUE camera, and USB On-the-go.
Second: Nokia support is the best, they support phones with updates even if they are very old, Nokia 5800 for example still having major updates, while Samsung already abandoned Omnia HD with less than 1 year and the Market, and probably will abandon Galaxy S too.
Third: They are very, very reliable, they don't simply break in pieces like and iPhone when hit the floor.
Forth: Nokia doesn't fault users for theirs mistakes, like Apple does with the iPhone 4 antenna problem.

[deleted post]My mistake, was in a hurry. Anyway, the AVERAGE price of the smartphones was 156 Euro. What smartphones has Nokia under that value and by how much? Not many. So they must be have sold like 90% of the smartphones with the price under 156 Euro, and max 10% with the price of 400 Euro(N8), so that gives the same 2.8 million N8's.

I expected MUCH worse results. Apparently people still buy their phones for some reason though. North America wasn't ever their market and fail was only expected. Chinese results are surprising. They usually stray away from overpriced devices. I expected inferior results in Europe.

Maybe Nokia should try something different and release a Android handset. Nokia simplicity with android power, cant go wrong there.

Nokia sold in total 4.407 million smartphones. If you consider that at least 1 million were not the N8, it means Nokia sold less that 3.4 million N8's. But the real number can be at the half, so 2.2 million N8, since accessories are counted as well in this number of 4.4 million.
                    So N8 is a FAILURE!

Nokia sold less phones than in 2009 everywhere except China.
This compensated their loss all over the world, but for this year the story might be different.

"In short, the industry changed, and now it's time for Nokia to change faster" says Elop.

                              That's all.

Nokia will suffer like this more if they don't launch phones at right time in India. See january end and still no c6-01 in india. Till it launches here, people will get other phones and other will wait for next better phones

Nokia not gaining only because of navteq. Navteq running on loss because they r providing maps and navigation free of cost till your phone works.

It is really funny how many people consider Nokia is dying now...

Here are some figures for you:
                                        2009 - Nokia sold 431,8 million phones
                                        2010 - Nokia sold 453 million phones

                                        2009 - Nokia sold 67,8 million smartphones
                                        2010 - Nokia sold 100,3 million smartphones

                                        2009 - Nokia's total operating profits 1 197 million
                                        2010 - Nokia's total operating profits 2 097 million

Does that sound like dying to you? 2009 Q4 was very strong for Nokia so comparing 2010 Q4 to that doesn't give exactly perfect picture. It certainly doesn't really show like "dying" to me.

You want me to compare those numbers to LG, SE or Moto maybe?
