it went downhill right after being purchased and "improved" by Yahoo.

Many youngsters here won't know but Yahoo! is a pioneer in the World Wide Web ever since the World Wide Web came into existence back in 1993. Google never existed during Yahoo's dominance.

I saw the rise of legendary websites and some are still a landmark. Yahoo was one of the first (if not the first) website.

Yahoo paved the way for many companies, websites and portals. Yahoo has been one of the best portals in all of the internet. You name it, Yahoo had it. Yahoo was the number one search engine back then with Altavista being second and others like Webcrawler, Excite and Hotbot right behind. Smartphones was non-existent during that era and everything was computers (for those who could afford them).

Another division of Yahoo (or relative) was Geocities. Geocities was one of the first (if not the first) file storage site which also paved the way for others.

Though the original Myspace no longer exists, Myspace was one of the first (if not the first) Social Networking Communities (which people like to refer to as social media) and it too paved the way for others.

I remember back in the late 90s when Google came on board, in using it I saw where they copied Yahoo style of search, including the format, font size, colour font and even the results were in the same exact order as Yahoo. When I compared both search engines side by side the only difference I saw was the URL (website address). Google started off as a copycat, they copied Yahoo. It worked though because they have surpassed Yahoo where the search engine part is concerned...the catch phrase 'Google it' is the magic word

Yahoo paved the way for Google, Myspace paved the way for Facebook and Geocities paved the way for Rapidshare and all the other file storage/cloud storage since.

ithehappy, 10 Jan 2017Yahoo is dead, for long time now too.To ITHEHAPPY:

You are dead wrong, Yahoo! is still very much alive. My Yahoo mail works well where my job is concerned. I look to Yahoo on a daily basis for all-in-one news, sports, tech news and more and I see everything easily and hassle free.

Remember a website called MSN.com which was Internet Explorer homepage? That is what I called dead. It was dead in my view from day one. It was never able to compete with Yahoo!

                      Anyone remember Yahoo radio?

AnonD-558092, 10 Jan 2017Altaba? Where did they found that name? Yahoo is dying, and... moreMisunderstanding everywhere. Let me clear this up for you guys who have low comprehension skills. Yahoo is still alive! Yes. 49.5% of Yahoo is simply bought by Verizon. This 49.5% is Yahoo core business. The other 50.5% is just asset in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan which Verizon cannot buy. Yahoo total value is over $30million. Verizon bought $5million only. Yahoo is not renamed as Altaba but the 50.5% asset is renamed as Altaba.

Altaba, though, will do virtually nothing but hold these assets, as what is known as 'an investment company'. Because there is little decision-making involved in being basically a ticker symbol, Altaba does not need a full board of directors, so it will slash the size of the current Yahoo board in half. Among those who will no longer be on the board are Mayer, who could still be acting as the head of Yahoo under Verizon leadership, and Yahoo co-founder David Filo.

So Yahoo will still be Yahoo, Altaba will be a zombie company comprising a bunch of assets and few, if any, tasks, and Mayer may or may not still be running the actual Yahoo. No matter what anyone on Internet says.
