2010 mobile phone market overview: the best and the rest

28 January, 2011
After all major manufacturers posted their 2010 financial reports, it's time we draw the line and see what has changed over the past year. Apple was the biggest winner, surpassing several companies and...

It would be better if only smartphone sales are considered. 3100 has sold more units than iphone4,doesn't make the former a better device. Clubbing feature phones in the same bracket, only exaggerates the market share of nokia n samsung, both of which make tons of feature-phones.

Mac, 29 Jan 2011I agree.ya MAC you are right. camera without AF is worthless. as i said, nokia is stubborn. they produce phones as they like. they think ''oh 8mp without AF is ok, customers will be satisfied '', and the next day they start shipping c7 and e7 without AF cameras. its just ridiculous. they don't listen to what customers have to say. . .

Nokia have dug its own grave. They are stubborn. They only produce phones as they like. They don't even try to listen to customers. In high-end phones like N8 people want the best in specs. But they are just stuck with arm11 680 mhz cpu, 256 mb ram, etc. It doesn't matter wether symbian runs smooth with that much spec or not, its about customer attraction. Then nly they will buy the phone na. Look at motorola atrix 4g n lg optimus 2x, they have attractive specs so thus they will attract more customers. Thats the reason why nokia is loosing grounds. Recently there was an Ad on t.v of n8. It says '' capture stunning photos with its 12mp camera and download thousands of apps from ovi store. Its an amazing technology what will u do with it ''. . .what the hell is this, they should mention its amoled screen, xenon flash, 16gb inbuilt memory, etc. Nokia's marketing division sucks. Actually over the last years nokia was the best, so they have in mind that '' oh we(nokia) are still the best ''. . . This thinking of theirs will lead to the death of nokia.

      (P.S I am a nokia user. N86 8MP)

As a Nokia fan, I think the decision to omit AF in their newer phones is very stupid. They underestimate the customers, thinking that they would only care about the megapixel count - WRONG!

I hope Nokia realize their mistake and bring AF back to their phones. In general, 5MP AF is better than 8MP FF; of course 8 MP with AF as the minimum spec for the cameras of all their mid-level phones is even better. FF should only be used on either dumb or cheap phones only!

Also, while Symbian is in general more efficient than other smart phone OS, they need to realize that many potential customers have no idea about this. Many customers simply want the latest spec, esp. CPU and amount of RAM at an affordable price (e.g. LG Optimus One). Nokia also failed to promote one of S^3 hardware advantage, the super strong GPU Broadcom BCM2727. Nokia simply let people beat their phones up about the weak ARM11 CPU without educating the press and potential customers enough about the superior BCM2727 GPU in S^3 handsets.

Most people don't even know that S^3 handsets have no fragmentation issue, all support USB OTG, all support video calls, all come with some kind of flash, all support 5 different bands of 3.5G. Most people have no ideas that in general S^3 have a very solid connectivity compared to other OS; Android didn't even have BlueTooth support until 2.0 and Android still doesn't support Ad-hoc. Most people have no idea of Symbian multitasking superiority. IMO, I think Nokia marketing division is rather weak and should be fired.

Anonymous, 29 Jan 2011I beg to differ... lets compare Samsung against others who ... moreYeah. Exactly my point if i wasnt too clear. The art of self implosion. Well, when they let slip, who they blame? It takes one hiccup to taint a companies reputation or cause irrepairable damage. You believe jaugernauts dont fall? I beg to differ. I've seen that happen many times. They are huge in the market no doubt but there have been others even bigger in different fields that haven been clipped from the top. Now, be it a small issue at production level or a large issue at management level it still impacts negatively on the company. It becomes much harder to juggle all those balls at once when you have so many to juggle. One or two is fine. Expand exponentially and then see. So lets have a look at it. What is hurting them at the moment? Anything? So lets say it is something as simple as....software updates. So you believe that they do this well. They have such a portfolio of products that they cannot manage them all at once! They trying to appeal to so many different markets at once that they are even accepting to individualise the specific phones for a certain carrier. You dont see back-up and support being a problem? You dont see quick turn around from being a concept, to being a product and then to introduction into the market being a problem? Now that isnt a production problem but managements decision on its strategy. Normally a fall from grace is even more swift when the operational image of a company is created at the top. Remember, perception sticks and they have embedded that into many consumers heads already. So the image that they portray is that they'd provide a product but forget about the aftersales support! So my phone as an example, purchased a month or two ago, while others get updates to newer versions on the os and on a similar phone but through a different manufacturer doesnt get an update. Maybe late or probably never! They are too busy with planning a new phone. Current reality i'd say? Now, that is'nt a put off? The fact of the matter is that a products life cycle has been drastically reduced but maybe to 1 and a half years to change your phone but not every few months! My phone purchased today, feels ancient in a couple of months with sammy products. Now take for example apple. New product every year. Even maybe about 6 months would pass before i'd even go out and buy it. I hope you understand the logic here. The company has already started that downward spiral. There are other aspects as well that they are messing up in but enough said and i'm not getting into that now.

LOL seriously? You're using a ratio of resisitve to capacitive touch screen as a reason for financial success or not? Heres a fact. Resistive touch screen sucks, everyone including their grandma knows that. Is it Apple's fault they realize that the market likes capacitive touch screen better? No. It's Nokia's fault for using cheaper resistive touch screen to have a higher profit margin for the crap phones they put out. You say the capacitive touch screen on the iphone is the main reason people bought it? Again that is not true. They took a smart phone and they basically made it easy to use, putting out everything in icons instead of having complicated menus. When compared to Symbian or Windows Mobile this was a drastic change allowing someone to easily use a smart phone without having a steep learning curve. You say just because you are familiar with Symbian that makes it more functional? Please stop being a fan boy seriously. Show me a link with factual evidence of functionality of Symbian that Android and iOS can not do. Functionality is defined as the following:

                                        1. The quality of being functional.
                                        2. A useful function within a computer application or program.
                                        3. The capacity of a computer program or application to provide a useful function.

So again show me something Symbian can do that Android or iOS can not do? Otherwise Symbian is only as functional as the other two os and you fanboys should just stop using that exaggerated excuse. Truth is you fanboys never even touched an android or iOS device that is why you guys know nothing of battery life or functionality. You say Symbian is easier because you don't need to relearn how to use the OS? Either you're slow or you're so old you can't learn how to use it, but that is not true. I've seen ladies in their 40's use the iphone 4, my niece is 3 and a half years old and she can fully use her ipod touch which is an iOS device. So either my niece is smarter than you fanboys or you're just stubborn to learn, and guess what? Innovation waits for no one. Enjoy your outdated ancient devices while android and iOS eats away at Nokia's market share.
