31 January, 2011
Last week we did a quick overview of the big players on the mobile market, but it turns out we missed a pretty big one. We thought ZTE isn't a major player in Europe and North America, but the IDC report...

i think that only chines buy zte handsets
and if manufactures make more low end and mid end android phone then android will dominate the market by far because most of the androids are high end and expensive unlike symbian

Don't be happy android fanboys. Symbian is still the top OS. There was a mistake in counting of number of handsets.

Some guy from Greece, 01 Feb 2011"but then why are so many vendors choosing android ove... more"Symbian is 4-5 years old and S^3 is 4 months old. Adroid is less than a year old. The versions that were sold in 2010"

i was talking about entire history. symbian software was released in 1997.

"He meant to say that 10 touchscreen devices were released with Symbian while 116 were with Adroid. 1 out 11 releases is Symbian but 3 out of 10 purchases is Adroid"

so what ?? if nokia wanted to be alone its their fault.
if they wants more manufacturers to produce symbian then, they could have made symbian free licensed software like android.

"...the Symbian Foundation announced in November 2010 that it would transition to "a legal entity responsible for licensing software and other intellectual property", with no operational responsibilities or staff.[5]. Along with this announcement, Nokia announced it would take over governance of the Symbian platform..."

i didnt know that. thanks for the info.

"Yes it is obvious. They cut costs. Adroid is developed mostly by Google, while with Symbian they would be on their own."

thats google's strategy to make android number 1 os, and it has paid off. android finally dethroned symbian fRom its 10 year reign.

Yes it is obvious. They cut costs. Adroid is developed mostly by Google, while with Symbian they would be on their own.

"symbian OS is over 14 years old !!! whereas android is just over 2 years old. "
Symbian is 4-5 years old and S^3 is 4 months old. Adroid is less than a year old. The versions that were sold in 2010.
He meant to say that 10 touchscreen devices were released with Symbian while 116 were with Adroid. 1 out 11 releases is Symbian but 3 out of 10 purchases is Adroid. You can tell easilly which is the most successful of them two.

"i think symbian is available for members of symbian foundation."
                It isn't.
                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symbian_Foundation
                It says:
...the Symbian Foundation announced in November 2010 that it would transition to "a legal entity responsible for licensing software and other intellectual property", with no operational responsibilities or staff.[5]. Along with this announcement, Nokia announced it would take over governance of the Symbian platform...

"why did they ditch symbian and go for android ?"
Again: They cut costs. Adroid is developed mostly by Google, while with Symbian they would be on their own.

Earlier one had no choice. Except Symbian from Nokia. Nokia was once a household name. But things changed. iOS, and Android came. They came and things changed. Accept change. Yeah a new OS really gave the old Nokia a run for its money. We would never know how Symbian was when it arrived. Android has come a long way in 2 years. The OS will be one of the best. Just think of all the search engines we used earlier. Now it is Google all the way. Same is going to apply to mobiles. Google's Android all the way.

Nokia bought over symbian from symbian foundation and now nokia owns symbian fully. as the matter of fact, symbian foundation has ceased to exist. now all development of symbian are now in the hands of nokia.

is a good thing actually, seeing how symbian foundation has held back symbian with their slow progress.
