Samsung has/had a similar patent. They only issue those to keep competitors from actualizing similar plans.

It's patent trolling, they only keep them to discourage the competition. I doubt they'd ever materialize in ... a product form. Which is a shame such designs used to be the future... that is before the Koreans started the patent trolling...

If you hope for tempered glass I doubt very much that it would be possible with current technology, as it is a trade off. Since traditionally as materials get harder they also get more brittle, and thus non-elastic.

...It could be even better if they made the same idea like overlapping triptych, with the centre one fixed
Three 16:9 displays would combine to 27:16 and adding 5% for the two edges we get 16:9 ratio again.
Three 4.5" would combine to a 8" tablet
                              This could be
                              a QHD (2560x1440) that folds into 3x 1440x810 + 130 pixels edges
                              a 3416x1920 that folds into 3xFHD(1920x1080) + 176 pixels edges
                              a QFHD (3840x2160) that folds into 3x 2160x1215 + 195 pixels edges

Even I thought the old Samsung Patents showed a still-wide smartphone. But this one is very discreet. It looks like a proper long smartphone while folded and just imagine the expressions on people's face (:O) when you unfold it into a small tablet!!!

And let us keep our fingers crossed that this will end as a device.

The proof of concepts/patents we have seen earlier, have folding the 'wrong' way, folding a phablet, to a still wide pill-box.

This is MUCH better, unfold a PHONE sized device (that can be operated completely by one hand by most people) to a small tablet.
                                  Think two 4.6" FHD that unfolds to a 6.0" roughly quadratic (9:8) 2160x1920 , 479DPI
