Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 won't get Android 7.1.2

31 January 2017
It turns out that the Motorola Nexus 6 and HTC Nexus 9 are getting the cold shoulder on the Android 7.1.2 update. So much has been confirmed to DroidLife by someone from Google.

I have a Nexus 6, but will have an iPhone Plus in September. My wife's iPhone get updated the same or next day after the update is released. My Nexus is still on 7.0 . Of course the telephoto lens is the main reason I will buy the iPhone.

It's ridiculous that phone updates, even security updates, are based on the phone and not the operating system. It's one of the most egregious examples of planned obsolescence ever.

On the desktop, as long as the OS exists, it gets supported, regardless of the hardware it's running on. Well, at least for Windows and Linux. Apple does like to drop support for its desktop OS on surprisingly recent iMacs and Macbooks. But Apple long ago took over the motto of "be evil," from Microsoft. With Windows and Linux it can take decades before it drops support for some piece of hardware.

And don't tell me the problem with Android is that it has to run on so many different hardware platforms. First of all, Windows and Linux run on a far far greater variety of hardware. Secondly, the basic underlying chipsets and radios in phones are really just made by a handful of of companies. There is no reason Android couldn't be supported for a very long time on existing phones. Especially on Google's own handful of Nexus phones.

This is just planned obsolescence pure and simple.

I'll settle for getting OTA of 7.1.1 from TMO. This is nonsense.

Still no 7.0 update on my Nexus6, but from what I'm reading that's fine, don't need the bugs!

Nougat is still very buggy under Nexus 9 with constant freezes and it seems any bug fixes won't come for the device is shameful of Google for this sloppy support for all their devices with this attitude of only 2 yrs support they should at least continue issuing fixes for the device that started with Nougat until the next version of Android.

This is horrible. I love my Nexus 6 and it's hard to let go of this phone. It's so complete. Watching Google not supporting it's older Nexus devices is so cold. When the hardware is capable then why not still support your devices man!!
XDA-devs, you are my only hope!!

This is sad for nexus 6. That was a very decent phone. Though really expensive.

Google don't give a frack about customers !

Google has now pixel and Google want the dead on Nexus phones !!!

Pixel are more to cheap to produce, Huawei didn't want to produce Pixel, Pixel without Huawei are pushed by Google but nexus don't.

And pixel phones are a lot expansive than nexus phones.

So Google make a lot of money if you buy pixel and not buy nexus, so Google try to block nexus, but pixel phones are horrible.

                        Sad.

Anonymous, 31 Jan 2017Oh, will they release 7.1.2 for the A5? Nexus 6 still has 7... more7.1 is only useful for stock Android. Only brings Google Assistant and UI improvements. But right now I'm counting major releases. KK, L, M, N. More than L,M,N, right?
And you never know, by the way. Maybe it will get 7.1.2, just like many got 5.1.1...

Anonymous, 31 Jan 2017That's why we need source code. I don't buy from companies ... moreYup, custom is the way to go. I suffered 3 years with a device that got only one major update in its lifetime and had zero unofficial support. Never again. That's one of the main reasons I went with OnePlus 3 this time. Pretty sure devs at XDA will make sure this gets all updates till Android P and probably beyond.

I think people would be more ok with this if the Nexus 6 hadn't been so expensive. When you start having really expensive phones, people are justified in wanting them to be supported longer.

                                        Just letting down nexus 6...
i still think google never did like nexus 6
They never push the potential to the maximum
That device are more complete than the nexus 6p and pixel but they just don't care.
                                        It's just buy a new!
Expensive pixel a lot a like a iphone...
It's the google new way to compete with apple and the Samsung only copy and copy to selling
                                        No more originality
If the Samsung and google pixel want so bad look like iphone.... better buy the iphone and not the copy.
