Linas, 23 Feb 2017The problem that "enthusiasts" are not the same as "profess... more"Enthusiast" means someone who's willing to pay top-dollar to get the highest configuration available on the market at the time the product is launched, that can outperform any other configuration on the market. This does not necessarily include gaming. It can be video or 3D model rendering, real time light rendering or animation processing. Allot of these enthusiast grade processors are used in benchmarking competitions. If you mean professionals as in single entities, then no, they don't use Xeon's or Quadro's. They are enterprise solutions that are designed for a specific market, entities that either require a high core count (and actually benefit from them) or work with a large number of CGI,animation or digital content. For your daily video content making or 3D modeling, consumer grade products get the job done just fine.

Enthusiasts means "gamers" and games would not benefit from 8 cores, nor 800 cores in fact for gaming the less cores and the higher performance per core is the key, not the number of cores. In such case i5 would probably perform as good if not better and therefore AMD prices 8 cores cpu to match 4 cores pricing as in this particular "enthusiasts" segment that is what they need to win the market share. Professionals on the other hand will not be interested in AMD anyway because they can afford to pay top dollar for marginally better professional equipment like Xenons or Quadro GPU workstations.
My current upgrade plans will depend on how AMD will fare in real life tests e.g. gaming performance etc. Synthetic tests can be very misleading and it means nothing that they scored 39% on some synthetic tests is more important that in real time it will take x seconds to "rar" or "un-rar" file.

The specs look nice but will it work well as Intel processors. Also, not sure about the price being competitive? Quite frankly, since when is it a good idea to only sell stuff to enthusiasts when the point of it all is to expand your market shares and make money. Did AMD forget that they are a business? Don't get me wrong, I like AMD and own a lot of their stuff but you won't see me buying these anytime soon if ever.

With AMD Ryzen I can upgrade any time, AM4 socket won't change.
Top of the line CPU price won't go up. video editing would be faster on more core cpu.
Intel is too expensive for 6+ core count CPU's
Also i have a good cooler, so i don't want to be bothered with overclocking manually and testing for stability.

The researchers at AMD must go nuts when they see that their marketing guys aren't even able to do some simple %-calculation.
1,537 * (1 - 0.39) = 938
1,108 * (1 + 0.39) = 1540
Dear marketing team, here's some news for you: If one value is 39% larger than another, it is not true that the latter is 39% smaller than the first.

1. That's what they calculated the cost to be for them including their profit margin.
2. They want to undercut Intel by a huge margin so manufacturers of computer systems & end consumers seriously consider jumping on board and they win market share back in a massive amount

It remains to be seen if the power of these CPUs will match Intel by any chance. Personally, I would be glad if AMD finally managed to step up their game not just by rebranding the CPUs but also by improving their power substantially. So far, they managed to dissapoint me with the quality of their products but all is not lost yet for them.

The new Ryzen severely outperforms the 7700k, if only due to having double the cores and threads, and comes with a brand new platform that will last for years, so I can start building on it knowing that whatever I buy for it will still get a brand new processor based on a great architecture years from now, unlike Intel, which the next gen Cannonlake will come in a year, not bring much improvement and will be the last chip on the current Intel platform. I'd rather switch now when the timing is perfect, I gain a lot of performance (And I wouldn't switch to Cannonlake due to lack of substantial improvement, so soonest I'd get a boost on Intel's side would be in.. 2 years, I'd need a new platform anyway and that's wishful thinking) and I have my data ready for movement, instead of going through the hassle next year or whenever. It is just the perfect timing, big performance jump for cheap and at a point where I have a brand new platform with a long upcoming life span.
Plus, I am happy to contribute to the success of the good guys. I was on Intel due to necessity, despite not wanting to support them after seeing how they roll with their business.

For Core i5 AMD has R3 and R5 series of processors which AMD will probably announce in near future.

AnonD-98399, 23 Feb 2017finally AMD sound excited.. but USD329 its seem like not in... moreThe Ryzen 7 series are competing directly against Intel's 1050$ processor, they are to show that AMD actually came up with the fastest processors on the market. At the same time, they are actually priced at levels between Kaby Lake i5 and i7, which are not even in the same ballpark, they're so outperformed by the 7 series Ryzen. So you have a processor outperforming an abstract Intel processor that nobody will actually end up buying for their home PC, at price levels of mainstream higher end processors from Intel that it severely outperforms.
The Ryzen lineup will soon follow with the 3 and 5 series, which will perform closer to Kaby Lakes currently on the market, but at much lower price. It also means lower margins. I'd say they spent years making it and with resources at a fraction of what Intel has made a better processor, so let AMD get some income on the "premium" series for a moment before they release series offering lower profit margings. They have the best processor after years of Intel's dominance, and still chose to price it extremely reasonably.

I am so happy for this. I was always rooting for AMD as the more ethical company, they respresented the good guy in the tech industry, over the years of Intel cashing in on their monopoly and recycling the same processors year over year. Now, they actually outperform Intel, which doesn't have anything remotely close with Kaby Lake (aka Skylake 1.01 aka Haswell 14nm) and which fastest desktop 8 core i7 gets outperformed by a part at 40% of its cost, and on a brand new platform that will last for years. 53% Instructions per clock increase? That's more than Intel did with all updates to the Core architecture COMBINED since 2006!
The revealing of Ryzen is to me probably the happiest and most exciting events in tech in a very, very long time.

AMD marketing are the worse in the CPU world. be a bit ahead Intel old CPU , already asking for i7 price . its should set the price Ryzen 1700 vs Intel core i5 . by wining 60% performance with similar price.

Also, I would also wait to see the reviews of the 1700x too. Since the 1700x and 1800x are identical in everything except the clock speeds, I would go for 1700x if it overclocks the same or similar to 1800x.

Between Broadwell vs skylake there is an IPC difference as well, around 5%, and skylake overclocks better too.
Intel has really bad naming scheme for their E series platform. 6800k suggests that the processor is based on 6th gen like the 6600k and 6700k, but it's not.

I have 4 of them, 2 x ML120 and 2 x ML140. PC's near silent while gaming and 6700k and GTX1070 all stay at reasonable temperatures. They cost a lot for being just fans (but are sold in dual fan packages), but they are the best out there at the moment. :) Also have my CPU watercooled.
