Tbh I can't remember the last time I saw someone using a tablet in public.

Anonymous, 15 Mar 2017You speak of content creation. Very few people do that , it... more"Else it's a toy because as far as content consumption goes it's the dull cousin of tablets"
What kind of crack are you on?

Social networks? I could open as many tabs and as many programs as I want without any slow down and typing on my mechanical keyboard is much better and much faster than on-screen keyboard on a touch screen.

Media players? On MPC-HC I could run 4 of 4K HEVC 60fps FLAC at the same time by decoding with 1070 (support up to 8K) via DXVA with 5% CPU usage or decoding directly with CPU if I want to. And don't get me start with the super cheap but super power house like $330 R7 1700 65w that can do as good as $1000 6900K 140w. It probably can run at 16K 60fps or even higher.

E-book readers? I can just read on FoxitReader on any screen I want and how I want, like on my DELL 24" as it is or I can rotate it to portrait mode or even read it on my 65" 4K TV.

Games? There're just so many PC games I could play forever and never play all of them, far better quality, all kind of genres in single platform, emulators, VR, etc, etc. While mobile games are just trash in comparison and almost all of them are just cash grab with pay wall.

"A laptop is a toy because of its weird control scheme"
Again. What kind of crack are you on? You can install ANY OS that you want and you can install ANY programs that you want as long as there's driver support for it. Hell, I still using Windows 7 on all of my PCs and laptops because I don't like Windows 10 and how MS handle the OS. I can even go back to Windows XP if I want to.

"Most people are accustomed to touch interfacing at this point"
More like most of the people who just start using a smartphone around 2007 and onward and in their life never touch a computer before. Also I never see anyone using on-screen keyboard on a tablet to work in a office or using a tablet in their business presentation either. While most of the time I see people using tablet to watch movie, read something, play those terrible mobile games while on toilet. People can live without one. It's just unnecessarily. Obviously because tablet is just a toy. Honestly, it's like I'm arguing with a 9 years old kid.

Anonymous, 15 Mar 2017Hey! It's me the one you replied to! 1) Of course! Becau... moreYou speak of content creation. Very few people do that , it's like 20-80 (the amount of people who create content vs those that don't ). So yeah, if you belong into that 20%, absolutely, buy a laptop. Else it's a toy because as far as content consumption goes it's the dull cousin of tablets. Social networks, media players, ebook readers are much better on a tablet, simple as that.

So yeah, for 80% of the people a laptop is a toy because of its weird control scheme. Most people are accustomed to touch interfacing at this point.

      G'night.

Anonymous, 15 Mar 2017Phones are just toys and would never pay much for them. Oh ... moreHey! It's me the one you replied to!

        1) Of course! Because a laptop can't do anything as good as or better than a phone or a tablet. Oh wait... snap~.

        2) What if I want some of professional tools? Like AFX, Premiere, PS, Illust, SAI, SF, MeGUI, etc. Or something simple like play games on Steam or output my 4K/8K 60fps HEVC/VP9 FLAC/AAC movies to my 4K TV. Oh, it's only have potato CPU and GPU, so it can't, lol. At $600 I could grab a laptop with i7-6700HQ and GTX950 or pay $100 more for GTX1050Ti. And I could get even better specs if I go with a custom build PC if I don't need mobility.

        3) Funny I never said anything about Microsoft at all. We can guess who is the real fanboy here lol.

Anonymous, 15 Mar 2017NR: Microsoft lost the app store war, not the mobile OS war... moreIt's like saying that zastava lost the "internal combustion engine war" but not the car war.

When two are so intimately connected you ultimately lose one by losing the other.
Using Desktop software via touch is terrible and one has to have a very high tolerance for mediocrity to accept it as his/her every day reality. Thank god I have an ultrabook that supports the kind of use that that kind of software was *supposed* to have.

The touch support for desktop mode was added as to give time to Microsoft store to actually develop touch friendly apps that are of good quality. It was a stop gap, for god's sake, and since the next step never took place the stop gap itself kinda lost its meaning.

Most people bought a surface in anticipation that one day it will turn into a true 2in1 , that never happened and they revert to ultrabook in record numbers, ultrabooks are simply better for desktop use. You live in lala land if you think Microsoft has not lost the mobile world.

Everything she tried there, ended up in disaster, it doesn't help that her partner-in-crime (Intel) hasn't developed a half-decent mobile chip for years ending up with lower battery life than traditional tablets despite the (much) bigger battery...

You're betting in the wrong pony here.

Anonymous, 15 Mar 2017Tablet are just a toy and I certainly I would not pay that ... morePhones are just toys and would never pay much for them. Oh wait ... mobile apps is the primary way through wich people interact with information. Maybe you should consider returning to 2000s with those ideas of yours.

Also there are two little thing that can really turn this thing into proper laptop. One is Office Mobile, the second is Linux that can be installed on top of android, so there you have your professional environment if you want to.

Only Microsoft fanboys insist on calling mobile apps toys. Mostly because their favorite company lost the mobile war.

Also Microsoft is made for mouse and keyboard environments. It's very inefficient and slow when used with touch. Once companies started creating those generic 2in1s tablets took a nose dive because nobody wants them.

Most people want a relatively lightweight big screen with relatively big battery life at around $300-$500.

As long as OEMs were doing that, tablets were soaring. Then they started with those hulking Wintel machines, ultra pricy (like this one) and / or completely weak devices (most of the rest) and nobody cares to upgrade their tablet. Still they sell better than laptops, going to show how riduculously outdated Wintel is and whatever they touch turn into mediocre ash...
