In the case of the note7, Samsung tried to fit too much into too little space and that is why the phones started catching fire. That being said, there are plenty of phones (Mi mix, for example) that can fit a much larger batter size than the s8+ in only a slightly larger footprint.

The S7 Edge is a great phone, but I'm very much tempted by larger screen in the same sized device, which is what I've been wanting for for years. I am currently on the S6, so the S8 would be a natural upgrade unless the camera sensor is not bigger, as that's the main reason making me upgrade as each consecutive S phone came with a larger sensor. We don't know which sensor they went for this time, so that will be a deciding factor for me.

That is why I plan to keep my LG G5 for a long time unless it bootloops on me within a year or so. Knock on wood because my G3 S has never bootlooped on me after nearly two years. My LG portable air conditioner never gave me problems. My LG Blu-ray player is better than my current Sony one because it can read DiVX and the menu screen was cleaner. Maybe I am just luckier with Lucky Goldstar.
Removable battery is a must. I know even batteries sealed in their package degrades after years. LG will stop manufacturing the G5 batteries and we will be stuck with inferior Chinese ones as seen from my experience with a Sony PSP. But 80% of an original capacity is better than nothing and far cheaper to replace.
I simply don't like this idea of stretching a screen but with the compromise with battery size and smaller camera sensor. One step forward, two steps back. I see no real advantages for ergonomics except having a smaller or same footprint vs another one with a slightly smaller display.
These new SoCs built on 10nm and promise of 40% less consumption better work some miracles or this is the S6 all over again. Something Samsung will correct with the S9 since 2017 is a tick year for them to experiment. While 2018's S9 will be similar designed but with refinements like what S7 was to the S6.

Simon, 23 Mar 2017This is not consistent at all. They provided examples from ... moreIn LG G6 they made the front camera sensor smaller due to lack of space. If that's a trend I think S8 will follow. It would probably mean a double downgrade too (battery + camera) all the while keeping the same ram (very important for day-to-day performance due to the ram caching ability of android) and same resolution (just a bit stretched due to the awkward aspect ratio).
Are you sure this phone would be a good buy?
There are several key characteristics that S7 edge is equal or better and would be found for peanuts by then..

Anonymous, 22 Mar 2017Faster actually: http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article... moreThis is not consistent at all. They provided examples from a while ago. Modern batteries are usually somewhat better than that. But yeah, after 2 years a huge chunk of the original battery life is gone. 80% of original battery capacity means around 70% of original endurance, in practice.
Frankly, battery capacity and camera sensor sizes that along with bezels being gone I care about most in phones. Bezels are gone, but battery took a hit and Im unsure of sensor size. Since its contested, if the sensor is bigger, Id probably still get this phone.

These are SDI, probably the best commercial batteries on earth. Looking at 80% capacity after 1000 cycles or 2 years as i predict

Samsung usually does well with battery endurance, hope the S8 can last long because it's going to need all the 'optimizations' it can get it last long on a rather small battery for its size.

Anonymous, 22 Mar 2017They can but do not consistently. Sorry to burst your bubbleWhat the heck you are talking about? I gave you a chart of multiple batteries and they all see similar things. Yes it's consistent, lithium technology is not magic, it's physics. Physics is consistent. What ain't consisent is user behavior (number of cycles , when they charge, if they forget it to charger, average air temperature , etc)
By 2 years time a medium to heavy user lose about 20%

Obviously Samsung could have sth like 3800 mah in the smaller body. They chose not to because they want you to upgrade your phone often (once lithium cells start dying)

By 300 cycles (2 years time) you already have problems espec if you battery's starting point is as low.

I think that the end of the line for my interest in the s8.
Currently got a 2 year old s6 edge which is due for replacement. Although it's a great phone the battery life renders it pretty useless when going out for the day. That for me is a deal breaker

Anonymous, 22 Mar 2017It's not because of cost, a battery is worth $ 2I never said it's cost, I said that they "cut corners" intentionally. Because a 3000 Mah battery is far faster to be trashed after a or two of medium to heavy use. A 3600 battery losing 20% battery acts like a 3000 battery, but a 3000 battery losing 20% battery (after a year or two) turns into a 2400 MaH battery, easily not lasting a day *causing* the user to buy a new samsung.
It's not a cost saving mechanism, it's a sales inducing mechanism. Also don't tell me "not enough space", they could make it just 1mm thicker and add 1000 mah just from that. A 6.8mm thick phone does not feel that different than a 7.8mm thick phone in hand anyway...

Not a major deal breaker considering you now having the option of scaling down screen resolution which was such a great feature on nougat for samsubg phones. Plus isn't the resulting apparently set at 1080 hd as default!!. Combined with new 10mm snapdragon or exynos battery will hopefully be great.
