Intel has been DECEIVING uneducated potential buyer by "rebranding" Atom processors into "Pentium" since 2013, starting from Baytrail-M, Braswell, &apollo lake.

One "EASY" way to know whether it was actually Atom processors or not can be seen from its name. Rebranded Atom processor will be named Pentium Nxxxx (e.g N3510).
BUT, in my opinion, ALL pentium processor after Haswell are Atom, as its TDP is below 37W.
Lower TDP makes the CPU raw performance lower too, & the GPU will be less powerful than "already weak enough" Intel HD graphics.

Why? Because its TDP is only 6W, meaning its raw CPU performance definitely closer to Atom.
In my opinion, the "last" Pentium is Haswell-based (Haswell-MB) with TDP 37W.
The newer one with 15W TDP and below, considered "rebrand" of Atom processors.

Reason why Intel integrate it to Pentium family?
The BIG one because Atom processors NOTORIOUS for its slow processors & bad IGP.
Atom processors nowadays used for smartphone & tablet or 2-in-1 devices, which doesn't need high CPU performance, while the Atom for sub-notebook rebranded as "Pentium" so that uneducated potential buyer won't know that they are actually going to buy pc/notebook with CRAPPY processors with "4-core processors" as its selling point.

Older being the key word there.
Apollo Lake is not Atom? But for instance N4200 uses Goldmont architecture and Goldmont is for Atoms.
Or are you reffering to new branding Atom, Celeron and Pentium? Those are still the "same" cores, it's still Atom no matter they use Pentium name for it.

The-Bird, 05 Apr 2017Well Xiaomi killed the tab. 1. No MicroSD Slot. 2. 64 GB ... moreIt uses 4:3 screen which is notoriously bad for media so Xiaomi had you covered there. So no need for extra storage which is why they don't give any.

PS: I don't see why they keep using this terrible aspect ratio. Games and videos are widescreen, website are optimized for widescreen. 4:3 belongs to the 90s and CRT screens. It's terrible.

Apple uses it but at least they have a myriad of optimized apps for this weird aspect ratio. Android has none. So why do Androids use it? IT's a mystery. I'll never buy a 4:3 tablet ...

Fearghast, 06 Apr 2017Well new Intel Atom chips - Apollo Lakes are as fast as old... moreApollo lake is not an atom. Also has half the single core performance than a Core M, so it's not a Core-M either.

It's somewhere in-between, but that's beyond the point since the rumours were that Mi Pad 3 would use an atom chip (not an apollo lake), in which case I say, good thing it never happened. That things is slow as molasses .

Atoms are great ;) you just have to manage your expectations and don't buy them for gaming or heavier work.
I own Atoms since Atom 330 Ion platform. It was decent low energy HTPC platform (passively cooled), lately with newer version, they can be used as light work SOCs.
Main ... probably only problem with Core M's is they are much more expensive than Atoms, otherwise Atom lineup would be long dead and forgoten.

What a buzz kill. Overpriced indeed and also the chipset is a bummer.

Anonymous, 05 Apr 2017Love my Mi Pad 2 (Windows 10 version). It feels really good... moreAtom never really feels good unless you're a fan boy. Easily the worst chip Intel created. It was so bad that they had to stop producing it and fire the people responsible for it. Even Intel hates this chip, it's a first to hear good things about it. Good thing that unlike the latest rumors Xiaomi didn't produce one more horrible Intel product.

The initial rumours were for Core M + 8GB of ram for their windows tablet. That I would welcome, but since they scrapped that idea better not produce a windows tablet at all. Intel Atoms are a scurge.

Love my Mi Pad 2 (Windows 10 version). It feels really good. I just wish this version could handle Windows 10, because the 2 GB of RAM on the Mi Pad 2 is kind of small (still doable, but it slows it down). I'd really like to have this with 4 GB of RAM and Windows 10.

It's predecessor was better. actually IS better. Only ram doubled

[deleted post]To be honest when i saw Mediatek MT8176 and it's two Cortex-A72 cores, i was like no way, MTK will rip right through Intel Atom SOC ... but then i saw some benchmarks and you are absolutely correct.
Mediatek uses 28nm and Intel 14nm so there is even potential x86 variant is more power eficient.
                            Interesting stuff.

                              Well Xiaomi killed the tab.
                              1. No MicroSD Slot.
                              2. 64 GB Internal Memory.
(Well it's a tab with a huge screen and would make a nice multimedia device and watching 480p or even 720p content wouldn't feel great so the storage is pretty low and the lack of SD Card is another disadvantage.
                              3. I wish it had dual SIMs with 4G VoLTE support.
                              4. MediaTek Chipset is similar to Snapdragon 650 and is sure powerful but I don't like MediaTek processors.
                              5. This one only comes with Android which is good if you into multimedia. Dual boot with Android & Windows would have made it ideal for me.
That's all, folks. Gonna skip. Looking for a cool tab.
