Counterclockwise: how big can mini phones get?

12 May 2017
Last week we looked at huge screens, now let's go small.

Sort by:

Mini, I remember when phones that size were your only phones. I also think anything that exceeds 4.5" has no right to be classed as mini. You know it's only a kimick to sell more phones.

I have used the xperia mini pro after reading the review on gsmarena. Such a great small phone, only the negative is it's thick body. Bought xperia ray for my wife, also a great phone with perfect design.

Anonymous, 15 May 2017Guys, you overlooked the Xperia Ray - small _and_ slim at t... moreThe Ray was my first Android phone, what a beautifully made device it is!
It was my daily driver for a while (running CM11, CM12, and CM13), but now lives a simple existence as a morning alarm clock, disconnected from the outside world and running CM11.

I picked up the Japan-only Xperia SX (considered the successor to the Ray), which is lighter and has better specs, but it lacks the build quality of the Ray, and is stuck on Android 4.0 due to the locked bootloader.

Nowadays I use a Samsung S4 Mini as my daily driver. Compact size, reasonable specs and incredible developer support with weekly builds of LOS14.

        the best compact is
        4.6~5' OLED 720p display
dimension at 130x65x9 for one hand operation
        14nm midrange CPU should suffice
        with 2700maH lasting a day
snapper can be optional high end
        boosted sound

        should do the trick

Samsung SIII mini premium? Did an author smoke weed or something. That was worst phone ever created by Samsung. Extreeeeemly slow, no updates, lagging and hanging calls all the time (you want to call somebody, you hit call icon and you have a 30-40 second white screen while TouchWiz loads your last calls), battery lasted 8-12 hours at most, battery gets corrupt within 12 months... Horror story... Firm bought around 80 of them and 70 of them got trashed within a year.

I still have those Xperia Mini and Mini Pro and still working in tip top condition. Author, you forgot the little brother of the iconic HTC HD2 which was the HTC HD mini. Still a smartphone because of its winmo 6.5 os.

L0lip0p, 15 May 2017Chill bro, I'm just supporting your comment, looks like you... moreI have G2 as main phone not much of a big screen but I use it mostly for texting and for games and movies my g pro is always there

If Samsung brought out a TRUE 4.3" - 4.5" mini version of an S7 or S8 then they'd have my money straight up. Full spec. No cutbacks.... besides the screen size of course. iPhone SE is selling like hotcakes for this sole reason, some people don't want to walk round with a cinema in their pocket.

4.8" Galaxy S8 Mini anyone? if you wish for something long enough sometimes it becomes true. ya never know, although probably not :(

LG superfan, 15 May 2017Read my previous comment I said big screens are no problem ... moreChill bro, I'm just supporting your comment, looks like you and I had similar experiences, there was a point when I accidentally crack my xperia z1 screen but I didn't replace it because the phone is 3 years old already and i guess it time to upgrade, so i reuse my iphone 5s and man... didn't need to mention typo, even navigating through the phone can be a little hard with miss touch and etc
Now I'm a happy XZs user with the 5s as the sidekick, looking at X Compact to replace my 5s but if the rumour about smaller versions of LG G6 is true, then it will be my next "small" phone

Im still up for mini phones, just that companies seem not to want my money. Bring a 4,5" full spec (Full hd, 6gb Ram, 835) and im willing to pay ALOT! Right now every other phone is just alike, so I go for the cheapest.

the best small phone of recent years without a doubt is the sony xperia compact series. They have one of the best screen ratios that can still be used with one hand. They had almost everything: TOTL specs, IP resistance, stereo front facing speakers, etc etc. Unfortunately it was a jack-of-all-trades master of none affair. Hopefully more companies will focus back onto ergonomics instead of putting unwieldy large screens with more pixels than the human eye can see..

Hayaz , 15 May 2017Any words about the Galaxy Mini? Even I was wondering the same. The S5 mini may be the last Samsung mini, but way back in early 2011, There was THE SAMSUNG GALAXY MINI!

Oh, I loved that one! Because of it's peppy looks, many people used to mistake it for a Corby although it used to run Android. It's specs were already outdated and low-end when it released, but even today the phone runs smooth! But check out it's super spec sheet:

Froyo Android, 240*320 super sharp screen with eye-piercingly sharp 127ppi. Unlike today's weak 128GB smartphone, it had a monster 160MB internal storage. And unlike today's weak phone with "only" 6 GB RAM, the Mini boasted of 384MB RAM.
And don't forget it's 3.2 MP camera with 320p@15fps video recording.

Too bad they didn't mention it in this article....
