But let us face the facts MP3 will never die. very few people can actually know the difference in sound between lets say MP3 and Flac,.. very few people are like me who can actually hear the difference.. MP3 being practical in space and sound would remain forever and will never die!!!

My own opinion:
1. MP3 is like CD. CD is the de facto standard for optical media/digital music, MP3 is the de facto standard for lossy compression audio format.
In CD case, there are SACD and DVD-Audio, and current hi-res audio, which is much higher quality sounding and is said to replace CD. But, CD is still ok to be used, and has the widest hardware and software support, maximum compatibility with any CD, VCD, DVD, Bluray player, car audio CD, Hi-Fi. Same goes to MP3, latest CD, VCD, DVD, Bluray player, car audio CD with USB reading, Hi-Fi, old cellphone, all support MP3 playback. So, in turn, SACD and DVD-Audio playback and media become less and close to obsolete, CD still survive. The same will happen to MP3, where most basic player support MP3, but not AAC, Opus, or WMA.
2. Audio Quality.
MP3 is a digital format, unlike magnetic cassette which is analogue container, won't going to be obsolete soon. Sound quality wise, MP3 compare to others lossy format, is not night and day like comparing to cassette tape quality. High quality encoded MP3 sound close to high quality AAC, Opus.
3. Audio quality perception actually is much less sensitive than picture quality.
I admit between DVD and Bluray, Bluray is so much higher quality, H264 (MPEG 4 AVC) compression is so much better than H262 (DVD MPEG2) and H263 (MPEG 4 ASP). I can immediately notice the different. But among MP3, AAC, and Opus sound quality different is not obvious if not compare side by side. There are differences, of course, just that it is not easy to be noticed for normal listener.
4. Hardware matters too.
If given the choice, I would upgrade my hardware to a better sounding one rather than for wider compatibility. So, upgrading speaker, receiver, earphone are much more sensible, and less bother on whether it is supporting AAC, Opus or other lossless audio format. At least for loseless, there is option for wave/CD format, maybe FLAC are also considered widely supported too, and for lossy, there is MP3.
So, this news is non-issue for us. For better sounding, for starter, upgrade the earphone, car audio speaker, or home speaker. The hardware upgrade give immediate effect on sound quality rather than depend on software audio container, regardless of MP3 or AAC, you get better sounding system. The same goes to TV, basically all the HDR format are much more pointless if the TV picture quality sucks. Get a better picture quality TV, like OLED TV is better than getting a quantom dot LCD, and is regardless whether the TV is 4K resolution, 1080p is not totally inferior to 4K, and won't going to be huge different if TV size is small, unless the TV is more than 65 inch.

I read this news on some sites(I dont really remember which one eventhough its just this morning), and both article just report "MP3 is ded" without going with proper thought. Basically report on just the surface. GSMA is the only one which report it accurately about the implication of these kind of scenario. kudos to Peter

It isn't going away any time soon. Internet has hung on to some pretty crappy defacto standards that just refuse to die- AVI containers, XVID/DIVX, Real..., MP3, Internet Exploder, flash, etc.
Thank god, some are finally dead now.

Many never heard a CD and started with digital audio so they have nothing to compare it too. I've tried educating ppl and they don't care. They just want to use as litte as space as possible.

It is another way of them apples to suck some more money out if their Kindergarten minded customers. They tried it since ever, they will try further. Their only problem is that their are also a bit more intelligent people that do not let them monopolize the ports market, offering way better technology on way cheaper ports.

Thanks for sharing this article so people would be aware if they come across that interview, declaring MP3 as dead. When I was reading it, I have no idea with patents but they kept on touting the AAC format and felt that they are trying to sell AAC.
Years ago, there are many tests comparing AAC to MP3. AAC turns to be slightly superior in bitrates 128kbps or less, and that advantage diminishes at higher bitrates.

In these modern days, with storage being so cheap FLAC should be the way to go for anyone who actually cares about sound quality. MP3 made a lot of sense in the 90's early 2000's when storage was expensive and small, not the case anymore.

You can compare it to... mini-jack 3.5 connector
because Mini-jack maybe is old, but it work, for past years it could provide EXCELLENT sound quality without any problems.
Or wall sockets... look at those big ugly holes on your walls that provide energy to your devices... its old as heII but it WORK.
Companies that try to remove such things from our life really dont care at all what is good for user, they dont see us as users, we are just numbers in statistics.
MiniJack just like MP3 will not disappear no matter how much someone will try to remove it. They will try to create some weird trend and find false informations why they did that(read: device is to thin or better quality) but at the end they will aways fail.

Things will only die when no one can play it. Cassette tape/CDs = Cassette/CD players. Betamax /VHS = Betamax/VHS players. It's that simple. So as long as everything is Mp3 playable, Mp3s are good.
