Please please may this be true. I'm looking at Google assistant to save me from Siri. Siri is so bad its truely laughable. There's no comparison. Google assistant/now is amazing.

Would be much better if its brought to android 5.0 and 4.4 I wanted siri since I heard about it now google unvieled assistant and I still can not have because Im stuck on kitkat

Think they should put it on Android 6 first, so that the majority of their users can use it.

They better give the Google Pixel lineup something relevant this year :(. The consistent updates and security patches for two years and the subsequent beta programs are awesome and mostly exclusive (Project Treble wont change much anyways, since barely any android phones will receive the Android O update), but they must really outdo themselves in the hardware department in 2017, because i seriously want a stock android experience with updates, but if all the interesting features that are announced like the Google Assistant was last year become widespread, a OnePlus 5 suddenly seems to be the superior smartphone even tough it should not from a software standpoint.

Was only a matter of time. To many Google employees uses iPhone for them not to support as well as Android or as close to Android. Plus they can't ignored iOS buying power, it's common knowledge that advertisers do pay more for ads on iOS vs Android.
