Back then headphones could come with an L-shaped plug, or you had a short extension cord (or an adapter)

              Bottom or top is better so that the phone can remain vertical in your pocket.

                  Some phoned have had the jack at the side back in time. This could be smart on a thin device, as it could go in parallel to the display top (or bottom) without the need of large bezels...

                    Much better (at least it is on the top).
