Adobe Flash and iOS: The best of friends, sort of

18 April, 2011
Unless we have all slipped into a different dimension it appears that some how Adobe Flash content will start to become available on all iOS devices (without jail-breaking, hacking or any other tomfoolery)...

Fair User, 20 Apr 2011IOS got Flash Support = Android Dark Future? ................ moreEven on on the quality itself, it's overcome Android games. Come on, name one one fun yet high quality games, other than the famous Angry Birds. Nada. Nil. Nich. Yes, there're a lot of copycat apps that's look the same as iOS games, but none of them, have the same quality as the one in iOS.

Just my 20 cents. I have Android and iOS. Just sharing.

IOS Clear advantage over android now is = More apps + Jailbreak available.
But in long-term, i dont see this actually benefit Apple App Store ecosystem, while u can see now Unreal Engine 3 game is playable on smartphone, More giant games company are targeting the new piece of cake in games industry. Android currently prove them they are a more secure platform (no 1 actually can crack it bug free.) Imagine when Bethesha / Bioware / CodeMaster / C.Asembly / SquareEnix started producing Big Title for Android..

Quantity of Apps doesnt guarantee victory.

Well, what about the fact that Apple has been so desperate to maintain its artificial dominance (entirely due to the fact they got on the market first) by having anti competitive, illegal and arrogant behaviors?

What about the fact that while Apple was desperately trying whatever it can to screw everyone (developers, businesses, publishers, advertisers and even its own customers) and destroy the web, Adobe has been laughing all the way to the bank by imposing its Flash Platform as the #1 application development platform that allows us, developers to build once and deploy everywhere?

What about the fact that the mobile market is not driven by devices or platform or carrier but by us, application developers? Whoever controls apps controls the market.

What about the fact that Steve Jobs attempted to kill Flash not because it is outdated but because it is too good and a threat to Apple's "divide and rule" strategy and a direct threat to iTunes and AppStore?

What about the fact that the European Competition Commissioner gave Steve Jobs a reality check by constraining Apple to reverse its change of TOS aimed at blocking the port of Flash application to iOS?

What about the fact that FTC constrained Apple to approve Google Voice?

What about the fact that Steve Jobs was recently ordered to testify in an ongoing antitrust lawsuit over iTunes which might very soon blow up to his face?

What about the fact that yet another investigation is around the corner over the Apple Tax and the in-app / subscription scam?

What about the fact that Apple broke its teeth trying to twist our arms (developers) to build for Apple first and Apple only? Even pushing as far as requiring us to develop on a Mac until the EU got involved?

What about the fact that the ban of Flash in the browser is now back firing and making Apple's devices ridiculously "has been" and isolated Apple in its corner?

What about the fact that the entire industry rallied behind Adobe?

That is what you get when you f*%ck with everyone and think you are so big that you can get away with it... Apple is big but not as big as the rest of the business and development world determined to bring it down as much for its arrogance and big mouth CEO than for its market advance or temporary dominance?

What about the fact that Apple's PR department is so desperate to keep the face that they try to reverse the situation and make everyone believe (something they are champion at) that they won the war?

What about the fact that Flash's mobile adoption is 2011 is going over the roof?

What about the fact that no Flash in the browser is the #1 customer complain from iPad owners?

Apple as we know it today is dying, long live the open web and multi screen apps.

This is a blog post I wrote on Apple's war on Flash last year:

Everybody please, think for once about what business really is... What makes the most money with less work will actually dominate. iOS is on only one phone, which was really succsessfull in the past. But look at it... Every halfway smart AppProgramer will choose to program their Apps, where they can sell the most. That was the Apple Appstore for the last years, so point taken, but now with so many Android phones able to play that stuff and a much much bigger community knowing how to program Java over that Mac Os crap and even people in eastern countries able to buy an android phone because they can afford it, but not an iPhone... Please make the Math and then tell me why iOS should dominate ^^ tell me what even Market experts dont know... Because all I hear are some iPhone Fanboys with actually not even one halfway good argument, why iOS will dominate... Please enlighten me! But dont pull that Apple-voodootrick on me.

A while back people lamented iOS devices for not having flash. Now that Adobe is giving way to Apple and iOS 5 is just around the corner, I can certainly foresee a dark future for Android. At the moment, it took more than 5 manufacturers to manufacture Android phone just to outsell one iPhone. Oh the irony. Face it. Apple iOS will definitely continue to dominate, whether you like it or not.

OMG you guys... I see apple Fanboys would say anything to make their phone a better one... Lets look at the iphones hardware: No better CPU than most phone which actually cost half. GPU isn't worth of mentioning, at least not compared to other high end devices. iOS isn't really that good, most of the Apple Fanboys never actually had a high end Android in their hands and even tried to see if something is at least as good as the iPhones... I mean, tell me, what is so good on the Iphone, most phones up until now can't do? I can tell you a lot what the Iphone can't do... tell me 2 things a android can't do, what an Iphone can. Ah by the way... the argument about that iOS has most APPs is just really funny, you know? Because I have never seen an Iphone User with half a million Apps on it and by the way, not the quantity makes the phone good, it's the qualtiy of Apps and every really good APP comes to both Platforms so you won't miss anything if you don't have an iphone. An Andoid phone can actually do all freely, you don't need iTunes or such crap (never seen a program for syncronisation of a device, which is worse than iTunes). The nr.1 reason for Apple having no Flash, is because Steve Jobs is a little Child who only wants his own good, but not for the users (Prove?: Tell me why an Iphone is so damn expensive, if it is not the Hardware and it is not the hardware).

So lets see... Iphone has almost twice the price (no better Hardware, look what actually is inside the A4 or A5 Chipset before you even try to answer), no flash, no SD Card slot, tries to make you dependent on Itunes and the App Store, I acutally don't want to mention the Netlock, ah and the Retina Display ain't really the best, as they say. You ain't able to just use your Iphone as an USB Stick without having software preinstalled on your PC. So you can't just put a MP3 on your device, no you have to install Itunes, make all the Settings for it and then sync and wait half an hour for the backup, if you really use your iphone to the fullest. So all the iPhone can actually do is, start Apps, which is not an iPhone exclusiv feature. Smoothness is also not iPhone exclusiv anymore... Pictures are not really better than most devices can take. So whats left? Only some Fanboys who don't realize, that Iphone is good, but not the best and by far not worth that kind of money and that Iphone was pure innovation when it first came out, but got no new innovation on their phones... tell me whats new from Iphone 3g-3gs-4... None, just stock multitasking and better hardware. Ask yourself: Why is that? Answer: Because all that actually made the Iphone so innovative, were stuff that actually connected your Iphone to Services from Google, but now that Google ain't best friends with Apple anymore, no good things came to iphone anymore... See Google turned their back on Apple and opend their arms wide for other producers and since than, most producers have a lot of success, so think about it before you talk!

The N95 was a great phone, but it had it's own limitations, like low RAM. This was resolved with updates. Dynamic paging and the v20 update made it like a new phone at the time.

I have a iphone and N8 too, and I'm finding both compliment each other perfectly. For games and social networking, I prefer the iphone, but media and music is great on the N8.

Neither do Full Flash, if at all, but I've never missed it. I never have time to stream a video whilst on the go, and I'm glad that those annoying Ads don't bother me.

Every nokia users keep saying that same, "it doesn't need more speed".

That's bullshit, Still no smooth web browsing on C7/N8/E7 and never will? before hardware upgrades.

Two years old iPhone 3gs didn't need more ram/processor. Actually it didn't it's always been very smooth even the browser is ultrasmooth which is quite unbelievable because it's so old device.

But guess what, everyone else than nokia keep upgrading their phone speed. iPhone 4 is much speedier than 3gs. So extra speed is always welcome.

when we compare games loading times with N8 and other hi-end phones out in the market there are huge differences. Loading times can be more than three times longer. When we talk 25 sec vs 6 it's a big difference.

And with Nokia phone's there's wall ahead (and it's not far) with outdated speed specs.

I had the N95 & loved it - Symbian is a powerful OS, capable of a lot of stuff. People tend to slate symbian/nokia because of the low ram/processor figures, without actually realising that the OS doesn't need 1.2Ghz dual core to operate very efficiently indeed. But then no phone actually does need/utilise a dual core at present but they'll put em in as they're relatively cheap & it will sell to the blind masses who like to think that because they're avoiding iOS, they're really technical.

They also like to slate it because of the interface. Yet in the same breath they'll slate iphone users for not being technical enough to understand more complex interfaces... Oh the irony.

The only bugbear I had with Symbian was in my N97 which had 32Gb in built memory but it partitioned around 50mb as C memory & lots of stuff like caches defaulted to that memory. & even when I repointed them to the 32Gb E memory it still took up valuable mb everytime I installed an app anywhere so it did need a lot of tweaking to keep it running smooth. I've not played with the N8 but I'd hope that was now resolved as it was the single reason I ended up getting rid of my N97.

Kieran, 19 Apr 2011Not the person you asked for, but I think a response from a... moresome good points but not quite correct.

Droids are just as closed to users as iOS.

In order to truly customise your droid you have to root it (everything you can do without the root is simply window dressing)

Same with iOS - you can do quite a lot of stuff with an iphone as it IS a powerful piece of hardware. You just need to jailbreak it first.

Advantages of droid over iOS - once rooted it's rooted, whereas if you update an iphone you loose the jailbreak & will have to wait a couple of weeks for someone to provide a jailbreak (although this is getting faster & some updates have been jailbroken within days).

Advantages of iOS over droid - Apps. Plain & simple - you don't have to jailbreak an iphone if you don't want to. As the advert says - there's an app for that & pretty much anything you may want your smartphone to do, you'll easily find an app to do it.

That said - I have both & love both for different reasons. & if you truly wanted to get technical & really play with your phone - get winmo 6.xx as you can rewrite anything on those phones - you have full access to everything day one. Just like on a PC. (although the OS is nowhere near as flash & easy to use as android or iOS
