Firstly don't compare ipods with android phones and tablets, they aren't the same type of device.
Not surprised that ios is used more in usa, android is still developing, expanding and becoming better known to the general population. I know in Australia now, most carriers are starting to sell predominantly android devices. So probably in the next few years android will become the dominant player.
Though through my observations most people I have seen in general/public use an iphone 3,4 etc a lot of the older and business people especially coz they don't know any better than the hyped up iphone. A lot more younger people have android, though young iphone users are the current majority, coz it's trendy and cool to have one..

As a North American resident I'd have to say the reason for this is Apple's advertising. We see far more Apple ads than any other manufacturers. Nokia ads are near non-existent aside from a brief glimpse in a movie here or there. North american consumers are by far the most ignorant when it comes to researching what they buy. If the TV says it's the best then it must be true. Case in point, a friend said she wanted an ipad and pointed to a galaxy tab. This level of consumer ineducation is rampant.

So iOS is longer around than Android, runs on iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch of multiple generations, it's no surprise that there are more users, especially when you count the iPod Touch users.
Not very representative.

well i don't know about US but in all the other countries iphones are not the phones which are buyed by every person, the reason is that they are too much overpriced and are not affordable by a person of middle class,as it is no use buying iphone, not a value for money at all ,remember US people might be rich to buy iphones but all the other companies know that there is a whole new world out there that believes in buying phones not for showoff but for using the phone and having an OS that is not limited to anything but is very flexible ,thats where samsung(VALUE FOR MONEY) ,NOKIA(THE TOUGHEST PHONES USED IN VILLAGES AND IN SOUTH AFRICA AND ALL OVER THE WORLD),SONY(yeah we destroy iphones sound with our powerful BASS ) comes into play

Gotta be a reason why so many people hate on Apple, if Apple embraced some of the major complaints they would make more money.

The US is a larger market than Europe and is actually the largest market in the world. Anyway, I'm currently a Symbian user. When Symbian dies, I'll jump to iOS. Android is good but I don't like the devices that are being manufactured. HTC Androids are unreasonably overpriced. Samsung Androids are bland and boring, not to mention blatant copy of iPhone. Sony Ericsson Androids are underpowered. So it's iOS all the way for me!

AnonD-6573, 20 Apr 2011is because iOs is better. Android fragmentation, security i... moreThere are even more "security issues" with iOS and IPhones! There is no fragmentation at all in Android, just 1 Android OS that evolves fast! Desire, X10 and Galaxy S is just 3 of very many phones that all are far better than IPhone4.
IPhone is not really a smartphone, it is more a fashion/status-produkt, and that is one reason why it is so popular among the very "shallow" americans in the US. Another reason is Apple bully and sue every competitor on the US-market, and have very "close" relations with Phone companies in the US, money can make any company choose/favor Apple products, trying to remove the choice for the customer in the "free market". Apple is worse than even the almighty Microsoft ever was.
