Of course, Google needs to finish the new version first.

Regardless of how much RAM it ends up having (4 GB or 8 GB), the Nokia 9 is shaping up to be a competitive flagship and, if things go well, could end up having as much impact on the Nokia brand as the recently remade 3310 did (or maybe more).

Of course they say their phones will get O. It would be pretty hilarious if all that marketing about security, OS updates and stock-Android would amount to the phones being out-of-date out-of-the-box. It'd be pretty scandalous if the promise of updates would crumble after just few months from the announcement of the phone. Now, that would have been big news and I'm sure that if the "new Nokia"/HMD would go the way of current Motorola, the tech press would write some very critical articles.

Hopefully new project Treble improves the update situation and makes it more economically viable for OEMs. Or more like, gives them less excuses to not upgrade.

The article on project Treble said, "it will come to all new devices launching with Android O preinstalled.". This article says, "Once on O, Project Treble should make future updates much quicker.".
Can anyone confirm whether Project Treble will be supported on Android O upgradeable phones too or for phones launching with Android O only.

The key thing here is probably how the Nokia 3 is confirmed to receive Android O.

That's a pretty big deal to me, because the 3 is a complete budget-tier device while the 5 and 6 are more like lower-tiered midrangers.

It's nice to see these types of devices get the attention from their OEMs in regards to software support, as other devices in the category usually don't receive much updates, if at all.

                              Great.
But since the phones aren't even out in most countries, unless they will be upgraded to Android P, that is not a lot in terms of futureproofing.
But since Google haven't even started talk about Android P, they could not possibly announce any such information. But there is of course a risk that Andorid P will require newer hardware generations compared to what is in the Nokia 6, 5, 3.
So for their commitment to timely updates, Nokia really need to get their phones out in all markets quickly after the release of a New Android version, that way, they only need to support one further update, to have the phone supported for almost 2 years, and if they can do yet another update then that would be even better, but is usually pushing it in terms of hardware compatibility for anything, except perhaps the highest end chipsets.

Great news & another step in the right direction from HMD/Nokia.

Let's say that "at least" they "promised" that they will eventually update them with the Android O. But now (presently) it is even more important to see what Nokia has in store for us with the 9.
