With regards the surface,.. i wouldn't replace two excellent devices for the 'jack of all trades' that is the Surface.

Everything about them is wrong.
Touch screen, check. (except the OS isn't really optimised for small screen, and is generally driven by keyboard and mouse..)
Stylus, yes. (okay these can and do have uses!)
Hi res screen, check. (It is too hi res. Has anyone here much experience with Windows scaling: it is very bad. MacOS (iOS) was designed from the ground up to render everything internally in such a way as to allow infinite proper scaling)
Lots of inputs and outputs and configuration, check. (like any PC/laptop)

At the end of the day it runs WinX and the user will be at the mercy of this OS. It is the least productive/reliable OS have ever seen or used. (and I have played with probably 40+ free OSs).

The battery life, and noise and a range of things that true tablets don't have issues with hold it back from being able to be a tablet.
And as a laptop the ultra low power processors (i7 versions even) perform fairly poorly.

An actuarial friend of mine who plays with large Excel sheets (need cache), got a new i7 (low power version) and his last three IT purchases all vastly outpower it.

Surface books are a great spec sheet.
And if we only had room for ONE piece of IT (and an unlimited budget); they would make the shortlist.

I would still go with an Apple tablet, and a proper ultra light laptop (or maybe not even ultra light)

I know I missed a bunch of things that make the list for why the Surfacebook implementation isn't the way to do it... and please, exercise your freewill and grab whatever suits.. but having spent years selling 'business machines'; the surface isn't all its' sold to be.

Half hour with it will confirm that.

And of course when my mom hijacks it to watch amazon prime or YouTube.. You have to buy stuff according to the needs.. I might ditch the ipad for a surface if it means i can get rid of my laptop too.. I don't need that much processing power.. Rather portability matters... And pro tip.. Never buy a phone or tab based on reviews alone.. Do a self hands on at a store.. Feel the device... Try it in a case borrow from a friend for a few hours... And best of luck for your daughter

Taking the assumption that Apple users don't want mouse control on their iPads is silly.
If you knew much about Apple product (and their long service life), you would know that only recently they have dropped off ancient models. The iPad 3 had five times the power of the iPad 2 as an example.. and that was aeons ago.

Dropping support for the ANCIENT iPad 2 with iOS10 was the first step towards powerful and capable iOS.

The underlying OS, is OS X, now called MacOS.
When they first made iPhones they use a subset of (very basic) features to shoehorn onto some custom silicon (second models, first being off the shelf parts).

Ever since they have refined that silicon to do very specific functions very well.

I couldn't believe the first iPhone I ever saw. I was working in Officeworks, I owned an HTC TouchPro2 (always had the latest and most powerful tech for my needs), and the iPhone could load and display a webpage very quickly. I watched a customer do some product research and price checks in less than a minute. It was impressive back in 2007 (?I think).

Of course these chips get more powerful.

Intel is in a real slump right now.
reactively they have brought their next product launch forward, and that isn't doing them any favours.
they have been desperate to get into Apple products for yonks. (apple tablets this year so far have already outsold ALL XBOXs and Playstations (current gen)sold last year). This is huge. combined with the same Apple CPUs in the phones,.. APPLE silicon outmuscles and outnumbers the big dogs.

Outmuscles? Yes. Performance per watt is what matters in mobile computing.
Apple, having an OS that is chipset agnostic, can migrate from x86 in a heartbeat, like it did from PowerPC when they had no 'competitive offerings' and Intel was what consumers wanted.
Apple left PowerPC with the understanding that they might move back again.

Now Apple has a lot of the best engineers making very custom silicon. hence why the Apple A series CPUs (A8, A9, A10 and X variants etc) punch so far above their weight.

Combined with the best consumer OS (OS X/MacOS) - it is just a matter of time until iOS grows in capability to be 'desktop class'.
They won't have any issues in platform porting if they wanted to, and they could theorhetically build a MacBook using a few A chipsets in parallel.

Wouldn't compete with x86 I7s in every metric, but could, with a very competitive power envelope, blow everything out of the water.

If that happened, and combined with Intel about to have to file lawsuit VS Qualcomm for x86 emulation, or Microsoft, depending where the blame truly lies...
Intel are hurting.
I would expect share prices on Intel to be very shaky for the next six months.
AMD being a very safe bet for a long time yet. (if not just for being the GPU in both major consoles, and likely any forseeable upgrades by Sony/Microsoft), combined with console CPU sales (also AMD), AMD have really come up from behind. Oh, and they are ethical, often 'giving' the industry useful tech at no cost. (freesync, Direct X 12 underlying components etc).

Anyhow, Apple users want their products to do everything as well.
In time we get more and more from the products. And as long as we have a fairly recent product, from the last few years, we generally get access to the new features.

I said generally - I am sure nay sayers will want to quote specific examples where it didn't work out, but generally such statements are not well researched or 'up to date', and if we want to really play that game, then Apple users could have a field day pointing out flaws with all other major platforms.. so none of this 'pot calling kettle black' nonsense.

This saved me tonnes of cost on materials.
Her art would makes peoples mouths drop.

I used it to upmark lots of screen grabs etc; no other device I own was as productive until iOS11.. now I can do the same on that.
A full sized tablet and pencil vs a small phone that fits in my pocket.. the Note series by Sammy are top tier.

When I had to return my second Note 7, the Samsung Rep couldn't understand why I wouldn't just take the S7 (claiming it was the same phone).

some people use the Stylus.
The auto (language) translate capability in the Note 7 was pretty awesome as well.
Siri now does that (iOS 11), in a way..

But yes, many Note users bought it due to being a flagship and launching 6 months newer than whatever S series had launched.

The OLED screens do get incremental improvements between products, and in Note 7s' case- the camera outperformed the S7. (this could have been upgraded through software.. but it is what it is).

Only reason I don't go back to Samsung is the way they don't roll out software improvements to 'slightly older' products with identical chipsets (unless like the Note 7 exiting the market- forces them to do- magically the product lives of earlier products got extended).

I took this as a warning sign that company ethics were a little like microsofts - we will play nasty if we can get away with it, but if we are losing we will roll over and be consumer focused.

With Apple I truly don't have to worry about any of that.
I know ignorants will simply look at the price and 'lack of innovation' they see (massive blinkers required), and tout that Apple tech isn't worth it.

Suppose they have never owned a colour accurate, battery efficient, lightweight svelte product with long support times before..... (perhaps there is value after all)

I know that the 20% cost increase to buy an Apple laptop has paid for itself in reduced service costs within 12 months generally. After that it proves a very value added purchase, with VASTLY HIGHER RESALE VALUE that any other tech items.

But neggers will be neggers. Just because it doesn't suit YOUR needs- doesn't make it a bad product.

The user below saying that 'ironically' Apple is used by creatives etc...
I have never been creative on a PC.
I can walk to the machine in a creative mode, but by the time Windows finishes torturing me, all joy and motivation has left my periphery.
Apple stuff just works, is reliable, and gets the task done. Seems professional to me!

You don't sketch masterpieces and pie chart your pizza bill like the ads show.. My colleagues use the spen to mark up areas on ct scans or x rays.. Its a niche area not exactly mainstream but Its definitely one of the most important uses i can think of

Looking at these two iPP Ads, you know they care nuts about the Pro users (unless you are artist or the temporary video makers), only care about the common consumers. Oohh with the power you can game (yeah shit games) ! Oooh with the power you can drag a video better? Oooh with the pencil i have no lag?

What about spreadsheet users? Editors? Accountants? Document? Keynote? Remote desktop users? ALL of you get gorilla hands!! Or Go away, go get MacBooks. We at iPad Pro cares only about artist and pen lovers.

But you know what? Thats ok, Apple users are creative bunch, they always find a loophole or workaround for restriction placed by Apple. Or like Jobs says.. if they do not like it, they do not buy it. And there is one reason you see iPad sales drop.

iOS 11 has started to open up the abilities.

I finally have an iPad without iOS limitations.
New iOS is what we have all wanted all along.

Its awesome. Can’t stop using it.... split screen functionality became vastly better, and behind the scenes preemption is on overdrive.

This is why people remain creative when on apple platforms (don’t have to fight the OS)

I didn’t realise how stockholm syndromed android had made me.
I loved the Note series (still do), but setting up a friends new samsung ‘s’ series, made me realise how much android was fighting logic.
Sure I had learned it, but only through rote.

Apple is the same, in that it took me weeks of reading guides to learn how to use iOS (I never thought I would use an ipad, and only got one last year), and I truly despise itunes and the music apps functionality.
Good news is the music app in iOS11 is improved, and usable.

Stability and speed of the platform keeps productivity at max. I don’t ever feel like I am waiting for the ipad to catchup, nor do I have to think about methods to do things.

I used to get frustrated with no file system, but they’ve applised that to and given us the launcher from macOS.

Win. iOS 11 will make these new iPads (and older ones) shine.

iOS11 rocks.

It is what I hoped the ipad pro would do when it first came out.

Apple didn’t do much with iOS10 (for the tablets), but 11 is all the stuff we knew would eventually make it to iOS (once they cut off older models like the iPad 2-which they didwith iOS10)

I am all for getting regular updates for five + years, but not being able to innovate due to older tech and paltry memory amounts hurt iOS.

With all the grunt in A9 chips, iOS11 can really shine.

Been playing with it nonstop, and I have gone back to fulltime usage on the iPad (with a marked increase in productivity).

I was remiss to hand back the Note 7 (twice), as going back to the Note 4 felt archaic (it was huge by comparison).

Now with iOS11 I can finally use my Apple pencil in ways that the Samsung phablets hit out of the park.

Having three apps open, thirteen programs on the taskbar, and a file manager?
This is so awesome.

Plus major improvements in camera functionality, keyboard control, and even the music app and the store have all been overhauled. And it is months from release....

Customising shortcuts- it is all starting to be a bit too much- best of both worlds; usability from customisation that Android always offered, plus a brilliant Apple ecosystem that doesn’t get in the way of productivity (my win 10 machine with gorgeous 21:9 (aka 7:3) ratio screen is just for games, now).

Security, predictability, and for tech veterans like me; a file manager, makes this the best thing apple have done since the release of the iPad.

New models should kick butt. And my ‘double latency’ pencil (compared to the new units) is sampled at 240hz (note7 was 360hz) and has ‘no discernable lag’. These new units should be truly great.

Again, well done Apple

That's why: http://browser.ge... moreits not just benchmarks...an f1 car may be 10 times faster than a regular jeep, but when it comes to rough terrain the 4x4 drive comes in handy..just giving an example..there are many things that an ipad misses, things that the surface pro gets ticked in a checklist...like expandable storage, usb ports, sd card port, a full form OS, stylus in the package, keyboard and mouse options, bluetooth transfers...etc etc etc..as someone with an ipad its frustrating to go to itunes everytime i need to do a quick transfer..its not efficient..its not the way

i bought an ipad pro for the screen size and nothing else..mind you the 9.7 one, excellent to read large textbooks...and imagine my shock when i learned later that it has less ram than its larger sibling, something they forget to mention conveniently..i know too stupid of me to not read the fineprint...and i'm not buying a separate stylus..since the advantage of pro over regular ipads is having stylus support..it should come along with the package...kudos to samsung for that, and microsoft too, waiting to see how surface 5 will turn out to be, or till samsung releases its flagship tablet

Look at what they did to milk iPad and pulling a few pro users:
Try 1. Release the smart connector + smart keyboard
Try 2. Stop upgrade on existing iPads and release 9.7 inch Pros with higher price to justify Pro usage.
Try 3. Still bad sales, no choice provide what pro users want from iOS.. a file app!! Drop smart keyboard ads because they stubbonly think 2 finger drag and drop is the future instead of pointer, plus support the new hip hop pencil usage. Thinking the whole Pro people are artist and CEO signing papers.

Each step trying take money from us.. but pro users are not so gullible as normal consumers. This is Tim's marketing scheme..

Basically they are still milking the common consumers, disguising the iPad as "Pro" so they can sell it at high price. Which in fact, if we where to follow the iPhone cpu upgrade path, they can only sell the iPad Pro 10.5 (A10x) same price as the normal iPad(A9 chip).

Now if you seen that rip off. You will better buy iPad / iPad mini, and stay far far away from their iPad "Pro" line up. And upgrade like say 5 years interval, because thats when they will upgrade the normal iPads and minis.

It's funny how new Apple is almost the opposite than Jobs' minimalism.
Douchey, pluralistic and mainstream. It's like they made 180 in aesthetics. I remember Jobs calling Microsoft as "having no taste" ... I chuckle when I'm being reminded how companies change when they change leadership (same thing with Balmer's Microsoft).
