Ericson used to be a top 3 company , then Sony bought it but it was still a good company (maybe top 5). Then Sony - Ericsson became Sony and now it barely scratches the surface. It continuously fails to make profit. Struggles to be top 10...
I'm sure all these are news (and no they are not opinion).
And there is a reason: disastrous design decisions. Very few like Sony phones ... In sites like this you'd think it's more than few but actually they're merely a vocal minority. I call them rabid fans. I mean just look at Xperia XZ Premium's review comments. It's over a 1000 (!) more than most any other reviews.
Sony fanboys cause major flame wars in most web sites. I've never seen so many brand faithfulls. It's as if their lives are linked to the fate of their favorite company.
I call their favorite phones what they properly are. The joke of the mobile world. I bring you *news*.

... more1) Mostly agreed. But Sony is not the only with great build quality
2) Sony gives up relatively fast. Slower than Samsung, but fast enough. Only Xiaomi and Apple can be upgrading a phone for 4+ years... Most Androids are disappointing in that.
3) Software optimization is overblown. Just use as close to stock as possible and you're done. Sony doesn't do anything hard, they merely stay close to stock. Again Samsung doesn't, but Samsung is not the only or even the beast android based company.

6) Which is cr*p. It absolutely kills many of the reasons to buy the phone in the first place. Like anything to do with image quality and camera quality. It's the worst unlocking scheme ever imagined. Those features do not return when you relock. Actually I'm surprised that Sony is not being sued for that.
I can understand for making unavailable Sony Exclusive features when unlocked, but the never returning them back is *bound* to be illegal in many countries . Especially since unlocking is thought as a right in many countries (owning your device), penalizing that behavior should not go unnoticed.
7) Can't comment about looks. One's paradise is another's hell. All I can say is that pointy corners are harder/ more painful to hold.
8) The big bezels makes an already big device much bigger. It delays the demand for durable materials (truly durable materials should withstand falls even if a tiny amount of them is used). Stereo speakers can be done without big bezels ... It's a design decision from Sony that clearly hurts its usability and portability.
9) Agreed, but most give soft buttons these days anyways.
10) That's points (1) and (2) combined.
Again you have to remember that the only alternative is not Samsung. Samsung is a middling company IMO. For example I own an OnePlus One and has all the benefits you've included above with almost none of the negatives. For example it's 3 years old and it's like new. Unlocked bootloader (without losing the warranty too) and having the latest community supported firmware. Looks like new, performs like new, costs half what Sony did, and doesn't take all the space in my pants when taking it with me.
My point was/is that people don't look deep into things. Yes Samsung is not a very good android maker. Just because you found a better one doesn't mean that you're close to the top. In fact the top changes every year...

Also valid criticism is not b... moreOk, I'll answer you why I choose Sony over Sammy or HTC:
- First and most important, it has EXCELLENT quality build. My phone is the first Z. I have it since 2013. I've dropped it so many times I'm amazed it NEVER broke. Remember it is a glass sandwich.
- software updates are the best right after the nexus/Pixel line.
- The same thing goes for software optimization.
- Sony has one of the lowest rate of bugs and force close problems.
- After so many years, the phone still performs without any issues, hardware or software. No lag whatsoever.
- Sony provides official bootloader unlocking on their website - having an android phone without root makes it just another iPhone.
- Monolithic design - not everyone enjoys round-cornered devices. Personally I hate them and in my opinion it makes a phone look very cheap.
- I know everyone complains about the big bezels, but I find them very useful: they help the phone not to brake in a million pieces if dropped and they are great to hold the phone while using it in landscape mode. Also it contains the stereo speakers.
- I hate hardware buttons - some of the first thing to brake in electronic devices are the buttons.
- Sony has no ware and tare over time. I can't say the same thing about Sammy, which after 1 year of use looks like it's 10 yers old.
My friend has an S6. He is still on marshmallow and we live in Europe! In the first week he bought it, the phone fell from his pocket while sitting on a chair. It fell on wood floor and the display broke so bad and ugly. I've played on it a few times and let me tell you this: if my phone would LAG so much (and I have an older model) I would throw it straight into the wall! It was so damn frustrating to use!
I hope I've answered your question. I tried to be as polite as possible. I didn't defend the Sony brand, I just stated my reasons for choosing it over Sammy or HTC.

Sony phones have lower headphone output voltage than most, around 0.35V, rest go for about 0.7V. While its better for battery consumption and signal to noise reduction, it requires lower impedance headphones to offer same volume outputs.
NonSony headphones are of average 32-50 ohms, Sony headphones are usually 16-24ohm, so provide much better volume for 0.35V output.

Been on many blogs, and the one topic that keeps being posted is the Low volume levels when playing media, music using good quality headphones, I've just upgraded from HTC to Sony XZ Premium, love the phone but volume is significantly lower by 20/25% than my previous phone, looked at all sound settings, equalizer, sound from settings menu's to no avail, sound quality is superb and playing via jack into Bluetooth speakers or my Bose home hi fi is awesome clarity and quality..but low volume via headphones not good, please fix Thanks
PS none of the volume booster apps available do not work they are a waste of time just in case someone suggests that option.

Also valid criticism is not bashing. That's what I find rabid about Sony fans . They can't defend their brand, but still buy it, still praise it (for absolutely no reason other than the 4 letters).
I have news for you. Sony is a jioke in the mobile world for a reason.

[deleted post]You need none for any of those. You can find better selfies and speakers in smaller spaces. Also front facing speakers on phones is such a terrible gimmick. Killing ergonomy for gimmicks is the definition of Sony IMO.
